Having been on another site which had such an ingrained "you shouldnt say you think it should have placed higher because you are insulting everyone else in the competition" mindset that i am wary of saying this, but i honestly thought i would place higher than i did. So can someone tell guide me as to why this got a 150th placing with a 5.25. I'm new to the site so am not really used to what people are looking for as a whole in the shot, or what people tend to take in mind when voting.

I have a feeling people marked it down because it was just an ice-cube and not "real" ice, and/or the "theme" was repeated and might be cliché, or maybe because the ice itself was a bit boring looking and not crystaline and all beautiful of some wonderful colour...

any help would be appreciated muchly :)

I tend to think if more than one person does the same basic idea then it is cliche but that wasn't your problem. You're right in that it's a bit boring and with another entry that did very well with a similar concept you were most likely compared to it.

Entries which have copycats in the challenge (especially if one of the group is clearly superior) can get hammered because not only do you have the usual competition, you also enter in the smaller circle where people consciously or unconsciously compare all "fire and ice" pictures against each other. Instead of group scoring, I bet people would say, "Well, that last one was a 6 and it was a little better than this one, so I give this a 5" (when otherwise you might have also scored a 6).

Am I making myself clear?

and with something as universal as "ice" you have to figure that the first cool idea that occurs to you. . . has probably occurred to other participants in the challenge.

which is to say, that your first (even your second or third) idea is also probably the most common approach.

so you will ultimately be compared to every photographer who took similar photographs.

:o)

so basically what you are saying is that the picture is sound, its just not as good as the other "fire and ice" themed pics and thus suffered as a result?

sort of on topic. i write down the ideas that come into my head after i see a new challenge topic. it's rare that i use the first idea that i write down. as mentioned - more than likely someone else has thought of it too. that leaves with making sure you do it the best of them all, and being judged against the better ones, or using an idea that may not have come to you yet ;}

i shot a few photos for the third idea i came up with for the 'red' challenge. at 11pm last night i decided not to enter any of them. they didn't turn out quite as hoped under the basic editing rules, and i thought it still might be a common idea. turns out the idea was unique...

I didn't vote on the challenge nor have I seen the other fire and ice photos. I left a comment regarding my impression of the image not relative to any other entries.

most likely.

but it could also be affected by just the idea that fire and ice is such an obvious visual cliche that everone's approach, not just yours, was too standard and not creative enough to overcome the cliche.

does that make sense?

BTW, I just noticed that this is your first entry. That's pretty darn good for a first try! Keep up the good work!

there are also unique ways to use 'cliches'... and a lot of times they score highly.

Hi, I'm writing this without reading the other comments. I'm not one to put down an image because it is cliche; I do love to shoot bugs after all :D The cliche here would be "fire and ice". Seems to me another "fire and ice" ended up in the top 10.

I think the problem here is the technical ability of the shot. It is pretty blurry and does not invoke any kind of dynamic feeling to it. It's just a shot of fire and ice, unfortunately. Next time, try to set up a shot that has more tension in it.

Back to shooting bugs.

You turn! Why did you like it so much? And to repeat a cliche, what really matters is that you liked the shot.

Cliche wins ribbons again and again. How many more times do we have to see spheres and other objects (fruits, berries bla bla) breaking the surface of liquids? My advice would be to pile in there while the ribbons are flowing.
