| I'm trying to get more serious about photography and want to start taking on some jobs. But the only lenses I have are the sorry kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8. Which lenses should I consider. My budget will probably be under $500. |

I have one for sale...make me an offer!
in the 'standard' category:
sigma 18-50 2.8 EX (the older or newer one)
tamron 17-50 2.8 SP
a good lens is the tamron 28-75 2.8 BUT 28 is not wide enough on a 1.6 crop camera for most any indoor work.
You'll eventually want wider...canon's 10-22 is the lens to get, but at $750ish, consider the less costly tokina 12-24 F4, also an excellent lens
A good longer zoom will come in handy too - if you can find a tamron 70-210 2.8 get it - almost always under $500 and often under 400 and a great lens (no long made).
The only other $500 or close to it in this category is the canon 70-200 F4 - a fine lens and lighter than the 2.8 version, but you lost a stop of light and that can be significant under some conditions, especially with a long lens where you need to keep the shutter speed up.
