Maybe I am being super critical. Maybe it is because I am trying new techniques. Maybe because I feeling under the weather and just want to hibernate but I am growing a little frustrated. For three weeks I have shot off about 700 photos for two challenges - and they just don't cut it for me.
400 takes for the ice challenge and this I felt was the best out of the 4 separate photo shoots.
There is one thing that I don't like about it that made me hold off on entering.
So I have two main things to ask:
What is your critique on the piece?
Has anyone else experienced the funk of not getting the shot exactly the way you want it and nothing is coming out right? It would help to know that I am not alone in this frustration.

Of course!.
I tried a similar shot of an orange in Ice once. I had a clear idea in my head what I wanted, but the photos all came out as rubbish.
I have also had many other failures.
I think the more you try, the more you learn what works & what doesn't. Just don't give up. Some time you will take something & look at it and say YESSSSSSS!

Having entered my own "______ in ice" photo, I can say two things that make this sort of shot deceptively difficult:
(1) Ice glare is difficult to control, no matter how diffused your light is.
(2) Focusing through ice is a total biatch.
And then some days it just goes like that, where you shoot 400 photos and they all suck. But then there are the days where you shoot 400 photos and they feel like magic from the moment you press the button because you already know they're good.

Thanks everyone...it really helps to actually know that others have experienced the same thing.
Now time to go hit the pavement again and start taking more photos. |

Here is how I approach a shot: What is important in this shot? What am I trying to convey? Do you have an image in your head before shooting, or do you just hope for the best with a vague idea?

That's where I am very critical of any shot I take Jacques. If I have a very specific idea in my head (which is generally 95% of the time) of how it should look and what it should convey then it *HAS* to meet that standard. If it doesn't then those shots go in the circular bin and it is try again or let the idea sit on the back burner until I can get it right. With the latest shoot that I did today I am again encountering frustration because it is not good enough - and I will try AGAIN tommorrow.
On a side note I have had one idea that has been on the back burner for *1 YEAR* because I don't have the right set-up. I have the props and my model if need be but not the 'environment'.
It gets so frustrating at times. |

I usually try my first idea, and then i get like 3 more ideas. They're usually crap too, so then i go back and try to fine tune my first idea. Its a loop process that takes forever, and i usually use like the 4th picture i shot. But im usually second guessing my photo until the day after the challenge opens, and then i see that someone else had the same idea i had, and i yell " how did theirs turn out how I wanted mine to turn out?! GAH!" :P |
