i posted two thread previously asking for people's advice on whether i should get the D80 or the D200.

so, here's what happened this morning:

i sold my D50, 70-300mm G lens, loweprowe shoulder bag, 2 gig memory card and wireless remote. a friend (who wants to start photography) bought it.

i had a big conversation with my wife and told her all the prices and deals. i asked:

"what do you think??"

her answer:

"why not buy the best one!!"

that sealed it ... i am now the proud owner of a shiny new Nikon D200 camera.

i also bought the 70 - 300 mm VR f4.5-5.6 lens. i wanted a VR lens, and i read great reviews about this one. i think the VR will be more useful in telephoto.

i'm so happy!!!!!!

now i can play in the big boy's pool ... LOL

HOORAY! :)

Hey congrats on the camera. The D200 will also enable you to the take advantage of decades of great glass that the consumer grade Nikon cameras were crippled with.

How is the fit & finish of the 70 - 300 mm VR f4.5-5.6 lens? What little I've read led me to believe that is was quite good optically, but hinted that it was very plasticy. I've been surprised at how few reviews the lens is getting considering how big a a deal it is in Nikon's telephoto zoom line up.

i've only had it a few hours, but the lens looks good. finds focus quickly and doesn't seem too plasticy ... it's quite heavy (heavier than i expected and feels like double the weight of the basic 70-300 G).

i hope to put the lens through its paces this week ...

i did see a few good reviews. do a search on //www.dpreview.com in the forums and lots of people are raving about the lens. that's what convinced me to buy it!

Congrats on the D200...you might also want to pick up the new Nikon 18-200 VR lens, it is very nice! (took my blue ribbon shot with it a couple of weeks ago).

Glad to hear you made a choice, If you were like me while deciding between the 80 and 200 you prob lost alot of sleep. Now you can sleep again and best part you will have a D-200 snuggled in tightly next to your pillow. At least til your wife tells you to stop bringing the camera to bed. Mine kicked the camera out after the first week.

anyway You made the best choice. Would like to see some photos taken with your new lens also.
