Does anyone want a fun shopping task ?
I am able to get a Nikon D50 w/ 18-55 lens for $650. I have some budget left over after that for accessories.
So - head to //www.henrys.com - go into the Canadian dollars section, and figure out a way to accessorize me for under $800.
Keep in mind that you are shopping for someone new to DSLR, who will be shooting kids' photos, portraits, some wildlife, and whatever the DPC challenges throw my way.
I already own a tripod.
I do need a memory card.
Come back with your list and tell me what you would get, and why.

I am not famliar enough with nikon to really help you much but I will say that you shouldn't underestimate the value of a REAL sturdy tripod. You mention you have one but please make sure it is good enough. you new camera will weigh at least 4 times as much before you even go to a zoom lens. if you will be using the tripod for portraits having it nice and sturdy will be important. |

Make sure you get a 50mm f/1.8 (I use it on film, no dSLR yet), sharpest lens you can get for the money. It's nice and nice so it works well with portraits. A good tripod is a must, so you might consider upgrading. A polarizer is nice to have, get one in the thread size of your largest lens and use step up rings on the others. |

What is the function of a "circular polarizer" ?

In layman's terms it can be used to kill reflection from non-metallic objects (glass, water and plastic). Also increases saturation in the sky.
Here's a link to some of the physics behind polarization: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarization

When I was a kid on vacation in Florida, my aunt would wear her sunglasses to go shell hunting, specifically because they were polarized, which meant that instead of looking down at a bunch of glare off the water, she could see straight through to the sand below the surface. It's the same principle, and it's also how you get those awesomely deep blue skies. Love love love love love my polarizer.
