I've been through all of them (i'm in an Australian time zone), and it looks like there are far better images than I've seen in the first few challenges (I've been on here for a week). I think I gave 5 of them a 10 and about 7 of them a 9. NOt to stick to the border topic too much (been covered), but I think once again there were a lot of good prints with borders that took away from the image. This is also my first challenge, and I've been suprised at the decent response (I wasn't expecting much).

Ah, my pet hate! After the last forum posting about this, why are people still ruining their (sometimes great) photos with terrible borders?!
I've noticed a dive in the general quality in the last week... I think this is what allowed me to get a ribbon, as I don't think I'd have a chance usually! I have given out far less 9s and 10s in the last week... what about everyone else? |

Generally the challenges that are pretty open, meaning less topic constraints, yield overall better photos. There are some folks who strive for meeting the challenge first and getting a good photo second. There are others who get good photos first, but then try to shoehorn the picture into a challenge where it really doesn't fit (i.e. my country photo). These less restrictive challenges though can be fun to vote on because you never know what's coming after the next vote.
Best of luck on your first entry. Mine so far is holding ok, but it's early yet. - Bob

I would've addressed this in my post, but we posted at exactly the same time. I agree with you to some point. There are some pictures that need borders, and some that do not. My preference is - if I cut something off that is of some importance to the picture, I use a border. If not, I don't feel it works. Also, most of my pictures with black backgrounds I use a thin line inside a black border. I reckon in worked for my office art pic. So now its part of my repetoire.

thanks lobster, that's the first feedback I've received that didn't come from relatives. I've only just discovered the joys of a digital camera in the last month, and its great (although I still feel like I'm cheating)
That abbey earned the ribbon, by the way. |

I'm expecting to win my own challenge this time ΓΆ€“ by coming last! I've taken quite a nice macro shot, but I wanted to give it a feeling of oddity and quirkyness and went and did something that I normally despise ΓΆ€“ I neg'd it! But I liked the resulting colours so I left it like that. I don't think many people can see past the effect though.
I'm getting the responses I expected, along with some positive ones, but hey it's all a bit of fun anyway and I've been more serious about other challenges.
By the way, I agree - the Fountains Abbey shot was lovely - very stirring and atmospheric.

At least you're getting comments Jon, so far 44 votes, averaging 4.6ish and NO comments.
Come on people if you don't like it fair enough, but if you mark it down because you think it's over-exposed, under-exposed, out of focus, badly composed, or whatever else at least have the decency to say so. |

Not to be rude, but your average vote cast is barely over 4, and you've made a total of 29 comments at almost 700 votes.
"hello pot? It's me...the kettle."
*edit:number of votes cast - it's only 700, not 1000, but still...

Point taken Pedro, those comments were all placed in the last challenge I voted on as I hadn't (and still don't) feel comfortable enough with my abilities as a photographer to comment before that.
I will try to be more vocal in the future ;)

hey you don't have to be a pro to have an opinion. often times I learn as much critiquing other peoples stuff as I do from others' critiques of mine. I appreciate all opinions, but also appreciate the fact that there are people who barely have time to vote, much less comment all the time.
In case you didn't know, sometimes people vote and then go back later and comment if they have time. but as I've said before, sometimes you have to move people in order to get them to comment. that can be either really good, or....
My current submission for Country Life has 30 comments, which is my highest yet. Not surprisingly it's my best score so far as well (though it continues to drop).
good luck, Rob.

Robsmith, i am afraid to make any more comments since i called your self-portrait a scary sob - despite your PMs to the contrary. I do find myself staying away from dark corners and am developing a nervous tick of casting furtive glances over my shoulder to see whether your middleman is following me.

Thank you, sage, for your concern. Thought i had a couple of friends at dpc but as it turns out you seem to be the only one who cared :) Let me tell you how i come to be able to still post here:
Middleman pulled the trigger, i dodged, and the shot went OOF. At this point we both yell Dammit! He, because he missed. Me, because i didn't have my camera as that bullet racing towards me with the angry Middleman and his gun nicely doffed in the background would have made a good shot for the Speed challenge. I then offer to open a bottle of wine to celebrate his staying out of the slammer. Middleman accepts. We mellow out nicely over a fruity Chardonnay and we make the deal that he will let me live in peace provided i will never make comments at dpc challenges again. Pretty soon we are at the stage of 'did you hear the one about that guy who walks into a bar ....'. Glad we managed to turn this into a win/win situation.
Pfoooooh (some Mondays are just more exciting than others) |

I thought it was a horse that walked into the bar....? |

No, Pedro, that horse only walks into a bar by the time you are on your SECOND bottle of Chardonnay. We never got that far. As it turns out, Middleman had a flight to catch in Vancouver and couldn't stay long. That was all part of his plan, you see. Do his deed of revenge on me, quickly drive to the border, hop on a flight to the UK, and would be safely home before his deed would be discovered.

Btw, i sure would like to see Robsmith's face when he revisits this thread (wasn't he the one who started this because he didn't get enough comments? :) and read these posts. Robsmith, please do not start sueing me for slander. This has nothing to do with you; it's all about Middleman. Earlier i suggested to you to do Middleman in. After having gotten to know him, i have to say that he is sorta cool kind of guy. He tells great jokes! And, fortunately, he's a lousy shot. |

Further complicated by the fact that I really only like red wine. Drinking a fruity chardonnay could create all kinds of other problems for me. Like being known as a guy who likes fruity chardonnay.

But which one Journey? The medication seems to be working now and Mr Right, Left & Centre have agreed to a timeshare on the body, I will be Mr Right (the logical one) Mondays and Thurdays, Mr Left (the artistic one) Tuesdays and Fridays and Mr Centre (the enforcer) Wednesdays (handy for open challenge results) and Saturdays. No agreement for Sundays though so it'll be an interesting day!

does anyone know how you find out the original date on your digital photo? is this info actually preserved somehow on the file? My contest photo date was called into question, and I would just like to clear things up. |

You can use ACDSee and it will give you all the info from the original photo.
