I figured it was something like that. I did have to go check to see if the 7i was maybe an SLR mechanism in a prosumer body.. I think there are a couple of models like that. |

Used to shoot Minolta SLR. But shot a friends F3 and F4 a lot. These cameras seemed to fit my hand like a custom glove. When I tried a D70 it fit too. So I got that first and was hooked. An upgrade to a D200 was inevitable. If I had plenty of money I'd own one of everything. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, etc.

Hehe.. If I had that kind of money, I'd go fully into Medium Format.
Although I guess if you're talking about *enough* money.. one of everything *including* medium format cams would be nice ;D |

Yup, I'm talking lottery win money. I'd go medium format and digital back too! Some of those suckers are 30k! But more importantly a nice 600MM Nikkor AF-S for my D200! Or heck my D2Xs! I'd have to hire somebody to tote my kit!

Random chance - You think I am kidding :-o)
Years ago (1990), I went in and bought my 1st SLR for a trip. They had a Canon 630 & (from memory) a Nikon F401 that were in my price range. At the time, They had a 35-105 lens for the Canon and only to 80-ish for the Nikon in stock. The Canon was actually about 40% dearer but wanted the longer zoom and it felt better to me.
Used that camera until 2005 (still runs fine) when I saw the 20D - already had canon lenses & flash and didn't find the similar Nikon features that much better. Had been watching the dSLR's for a few years but the ones I could justify were a step back in features from the 630. If the D200 would have been out at that time, I would almost certainly have gone with it. I love my film body but digital SLR really restarted the interest for me (I have had a digi P&S since the first kid but never liked it).
Somehow don't expect the 20D to last 15 years, bring on the 5D replacement cause I want a 5D and full frame but should wait for the 20D's 2nd b'day...... I guess.... :-o) |

I went Pentax K100D.
I had a Nikon FG for years, and then a Canon A70 P&S, but missed using a "real" camera. After a few weeks I decided on Pentax because I could use older lenses, uses AA batteries, the diopter range was higher for my eyesight than the Nikons, the CCD is the same as the Nikon D40, the Pentax had Shake Reduction which doubles as a cleaner, it seemed to me to take pictures on par or better than D40,D50 and D70's on Flickr and had more options for playing in the menus. Had a top LCD like the D50.
Also, as a Mac user, I am naturally attracted to the brand that works harder and tries to look better, and wouldn't you know it, takes a good picture, but remains the underdog.
I also resented all of the reviewers calling it an entry level camera. After taxes, batteries, SD card and a USB reader, a thousand bucks isn't entry level. We left entry level behind about 800 bucks ago. |

I had several criteria. I was making the switch from P&S and I wanted something fairly light and compact for outdoors and hiking and the like. I originally wanted to get an E-510 for the IS but ended up getting an E-410 that was refurbed because you just couldn't beat the price. I think I paid $350 or something like that and it came with the 14-54 f/3.5 kit lens. Here's the deal with Oly. Bang for your buck. And the zuiko lenses are something to behold. Widely acclaimed, industry wide. Here's the tradeoff, though. There just aren't as many lenses to choose from. Sure, you can get a Nikkor to 4/3 mount, or an OM to 4/3 mount, but the third party support just isn't there. It's true that if you get a Nikon or Canon, you're going to have a lot more to choose from.
I have to admit, part of me wanted to stick it in the face of all those Canon and Nikon owners too and go with something everyone else wasn't. But that's just my nature with most things. I personally admire many things about both brands, and many others. I don't regret my purchase one bit. my 410 has given me so much enjoyment thus far and I'll soon upgrade to a 520 and hopefully an E-3 someday, or whatever version is out by then.
Any brand is a good investment if it ultimately meets YOUR needs.
Have fun, take lots of bad pictures because somewhere in all that crap you'll find a few gems, no matter what sensor size you have! |
