i cant wait until next pay day :) (2weeks today) and then im going to order them! i decided im just going to do the standard digi bee kit.
and for softboxes would ibe able to pick one up at a local camera shop?(and would they all come with speed rings?) or am i only able to use the one from alienbees?
or would it be better to get one umbrella and one softboxes or still jsut get 2 umbrellas and hold off on the softbox for now? |

and for when shooting with them, do i need to do all calculations to get proper exposure? or is it TTL like? if i should in Av or Tv or M or P that it would all get exposed properly? |

Oh oh oh - good question ---- I made that mistake once. ANY softbox will fit with ABs, but their speedring won't. Only AB's speedrings will work. So if you are going to order AB speedring, you might as well get an AB softbox - unless you want to use a bargain softbox from somewhere else, but you'll still need the AB speedring! I went that route when I got my first strobe - learning the hard way. Go for 2 unbrellas and get softbox later if you need to. |

Read some lighting threads and forums - they do NOT self-adjust, you set them where you want them for the effect you need. A light meter helps to get the camera settings and lights settings right, but you can learn without one. Google studio lighting, you'll find a lot of resources to get you going. |

thanks.
i think i figured it out consdidering ABs brag about there WYSIWYG. if i have the modeling lamps turned on i can meter those w/ camera meter and then adjust settings accordinly?
and w/ the modeling lamp is it best to keep it on at all times? does it just go off rgiht before you shoot and the flashtube will fire? |

Modeling lamps are to give you an idea of what the light will look like on your model, but they are bulbs, not strobes, so you can't meter off them, the strobe flash will be much brighter. You can leave the modeling lights on, that's fine and yes, they do turn off a millisecond before the strobe flashes and then come back on a millisecond later. That's why a flash meter is handy because it meters the strobe, not the ambient light. You can get a good meter for about $150.
You would do okay working by eye, though. I did it for years. You set the camera to 1/125, and ISO 100, then take a shot, adjust aperature as needed if your shot looks too dark or too light, or turn the lights up or down if you have the aperature where you want it. Its not hard. |

okay so alien bees statement of "what you see is what you get" isnt totally true then?
i think ill stick with working by eye at first to cut back on the money im spending that i shouldnt be spending.
but to read withthe lightmeter doyou just put it where your subject will be then do a test fire w/ the stobes? |

Make sure they don't ship with UPS. UPS will rape you with brokerage fees. |

No, their statement is completely true. The human eye requires much less light to see than a camera's sensor requires. We can see fine with a regular bulb, but the camera works best with a bright FLASH. So, modeling lights are bulbs that let us see with our eyes what the camera will capture when the strobes flash.

I wish I would have known that. I got some Bees a few weeks ago, and the brokerage fees were a lot more than I had budgeted for. If there's a way to save some money, go for it. |

I didn't have to pay duty/tax on the kit I bought. They say only Tennesee Residents will have to pay a sales tax. So as far as in the US you wouldn't have to pay it. But not sure what your import tax laws are over there so It is posible you might get taxed.

I didn't order one of the packages. I got an AB400, AB800, some filters, a honeycomb grid, and a speed ring. After conversion to Canadian dollars, it cost me about $795 plus another $166 for GST/Brokerage fees. Watch your budget, because, trust me, things really start to add up.
I live in Sudbury, Ontario, which is about 4 hours north of Toronto.
Hope this helps you. |
