I found the channel mixer in Gimp, but I simply can not get my image to do anything .... its like a bad hair day, the more I fuss, the worse it gets. I also have a bright hotspot in the middle of my image. I think I am going crazy :-( |

Send it through to me and I will have a play and see what I can do.

it's not the sofwtare fault, depending on the lens you used you might get hotspots, some lenses are suitable for IR , some lenses do not work well in that range of the light spectrum. |

I am absolutely sure you are correct in this. I still think its worth playing with. I have not given up.
Judi, the image is on the way to your email now. Thanks for your help.

Okay...I can see what the problem is. You haven't done a custom WB before you took the shot.
When Langdon puts my tutorial up, then you can see what to do.
But I had a play with it and here is the before and after.

Wow, that is impressive. I can't wait for the tutorial, I must be missing something. I will have to read my camera manual to find out how to set a custom WB.

I can never get the pseudo-color shots to work. I can only ever work in B&W. So, I'm looking forward to this tutorial, too. |

heck of a save Judi. as for custom WB i don't have my 10d anymore but i think it was the same. take a properly exposed photo of soemthing green in your scene(I use the grass) then go to your menu and click the option for custome Wb and select that image. then hit your WB button and change it from AWB to the custom symbol which i am pretty sure is a circle between two triangles or something like that. then start taking your Ir photos. |

Judi you have some excellent ir images. I also thought you had given ir a back seat.
Good luck with your tutorial. IR is a tough tutorial to do with so many variations between cameras and filters and lenses and a million other things.
Here are some of mine.
Lots more here.

That was exactly how to set the custom WB. I have taken a few more photos, I will play with them for a bit and see if I can duplicate your processing, or come up with something pleasing myself. Don't go away, I will be right back.

I'm wanting a 72mm one, can't find one that size.
*Edit* I just found a B+W 89B from Cameras2u.com for £110! Yikes, i think i'll leave it for a bit. |
//www.ukcamera.com/denton/hoya.htm
I'm pretty sure I got mine from here; except I got the cokin filter to fit my current system. Whe i used them they were still on oldfashioned paper order form & cheque, so took a bit longer to come than most online things, but good price.
ETA: woah, the 72mm comes at a hefty price! Have you not got another lens you could use it on? Bear in mind some lenses just don't suit IR as it focusses differently - I can only use my old OM manual lenses, my digital zuiko ones give terrible lensflare in IR.

Kirsty is right, your canon 50mm f1.8 is a very good lens for ir as it shows no hot spot. |

I ordered the cannon 50 mm f1.8 and a IR filter last night.
I'm glad to hear it will work well, I was hoping it would but I wasn't sure.

Yeah, the 50mm and my 70-210 are the only lenses I use for IR. The kit lens (18-55) is pathetically unusable due to the glaring hotspot in the middle of the frame. It's like looking into the sun. |
