Is there a good website around to check out lens compatability? I am trying to determine what type of lenses are available to use with a Canon Rebel XTI. (Canon, Sigma etc...)
Also, where would be a good place to find out about adapter rings? My roommate has an old AE-1 and I want to see if I can find out if the lenses are compatabile with the Rebel and what type of adapters I would need.
As always - big thanks to everyone who has always been able to help me with my questions! |

I wouldn't bother with adapters because usually you will lose the autofocus feature or something worse. You can go to //www.bhphoto.com and select lenses compatable with Canon cameras

Thank you for the link. Much appreciated.
And for the info about adapters....
If it isn't too much trouble - can I ask people's opinions on this?
Ebay Lens
I am going on vacation in three weeks. I want to have some sort of telephoto lens before I go but don't have tons of money right now to spend. I will be saving after this trip for some serious telephoto and macro lenses, but thought something like this could get me by until I can afford good glass. My nature photography normally consists of butterflies, dragonflies and local birds with my snakes and zoo pics thrown in for good measure. Would something like this suffice?
Last time I posed this type of question I had some replies that I shouldn't bother spending my money on cheap glass and just save until I can afford good glass, which in principle is a great idea. I would love to just do that, but I am also know myself and it is going to be eating me alive to not have something for this trip that might give me even slightly better photos than just the standard kit lens that came with my camera (18-55mm Canon).
So do you think a lens like this Sigma or similar would suffice for the time being? If the Sigma is a bad choice, is there a better choice in Canon or Tamron in the say 300mm range?
Thank you thank you thank you!!! |

Sometimes DPC is about the best source... :)
Quick Google of AE-1 give me this.. //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_AE-1
AE-1 uses FD lenses. FD lenses are not at all compatible with Rebels, which are EF or EF-S.
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_lens_mount
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_FD
And this guy has already been through some of what you are anticipating.
How's that for response... :) |

Same lens at B&H... //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=391074&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
I think it's probably a good lens. Don't know that I would buy it from ebay, though, and you might want to ask if someone on here has a lense in that range that they would like to sell. BAMartin is talking about trading out a full Canon rig that includes a lens of this nature by Canon.... //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=554988 |

Thanks yet again (have I said thank you enough yet??).
I actually got the camera off of Ebay and two memory cards as well with no problems. I did PM BAMartin so I will see where that leads and keep an eye on the Ebay auctions in the meantime. |

I don't mean to completely insult ebay - I bought a really good camera there, once, as well. I do tend to be careful with Brooklyn and other NY,NY sellers as they are often not the best to deal with. Just be careful and follow the rules of good buying :) |

I completely understand. I have heard some horror stories about Ebay before, but (knock on wood) I have always been rather lucky with my purchases. |

You can try this site. Click on each manufacturers link. CA denotes Canon made lenses.
