What about your electric bill then? Are you a "connected condo" or "detached?"
Colorado here also. 1400sqft with $56 average in winter gas, $7 summer, and about $25 for electric.
Winter I keep the house at 62 (to keep pipes from freezing-65 is recommended, but they usually say 60 is lowest you should go-I compromised) but have a programmable thermostat I use to use. Not to mention a fireplace occasionally.

We had our gas tank filled up (topped off) in October anticipating a cold winter. Then we had a second unexpected visit from a gas truck in mid-November. I found the bill on my front door for $190 bucks saying that I had already used 10% and they had "topped me off again" and left the bill... I was home at the time, but didn't even hear the truck (because they weren't there long..) Of course, I immediately called the gas company and told them there was NO WAY I had used 10% -- I hadn't even turned on my furnace yet! Anyway, I just found out today that the gas company had just fired 5 guys that worked for them of STEALING GAS!! We are SO getting to the bottom of this one. Just makes me mad that the company is trying to cover it up instead of being honest. I'll let you know what happens.....
It pays to check your gauges too like we ALWAYS do! |

Mine's 1100 sq feet and it's attached. We also have a central main hall that stays around 60 in the winter. My electric is $45 but that's with working from home, too. Running the 'puter all the time adds about $13 to the bill. I guess my water heater isn't very efficient :) Haven't been below $14 for gas.

Right before last winter I replaced my natural gas furnace with an electric one. I use hot water to heat my house, partly with old cast iron radiators and partly finned baseboard.
The gas furnace was 55% efficient - 140,000 BTU in and 84,000 out as useable heat. Gas then was 7.89/mcf and my budget payment was $150, but that often went up in jan/feb to 300. (what't the point of a budget payment if it fluctuates??) My clothes drier and cookstove are still gas. When I switched over I had a $350 balance with the gas company, and my electic bill was $78, for a total of the two bills of about $230/month.
My electric company offers a lower rate in the winter if you have electric heat, and a new electric furnace was cheaper, smaller and more effecient than a gas one.
Results?
Electric bill budget is $178, so that's up $100. I have not paid a dime for gas in 17 months, and still have a $50 credit! However, the price of gas did go up to 11.89/mcf at the beginning of the winter - nearly a 50% increase! I wouldn't want to see a $225/month gas budge bill and the $78 electric! (that's over 300/month!)
So i figure I'm saving at least $50 a month and more like $120 now. It'll take 5 or 6 years for the furnace to save it's cost in utility bills, not too bad IMO. Better payback than new windows or insulating the walls of an old house.

Originally posted by Cam: Over the past few months mine has been real high. $210-$275, just insane More then double what it normally runs this time of year.
I looked at my bill a little closer. My bill was just an estimate on what they thought my bill should be. Seems they are low on meter readers and just pull a figure out of there ass and estimate what they think the bill should be. Is that not the most insane thing ever? I guess its legal, but certainly they will estimate on the high side (duh), so every customer who does not question there bill is getting screwed over.
I told them I was sure their estimate was incorrect and demanded they come read my my meter in person. They did.
I recieved a $510 credit on my gas bill in the mail today. I contemplated calling them and demanding a check instead of the credit, but I knew that would not ever work, and it was not worth the hassle. |
Around here you can actually request that they "guess" every month for you. They take the average of the last year or two and all your bills are the same. Then at the end of the year you either owe them or they owe you.
I doubt they were actually going to rip you off; you would have gotten the credit next time they got around to reading the meter.
