I am looking for an alternative to the old sling style neck strap. The kind that is typically thrown in for free with most DSLR's. The problem I have with mine is that if I am doing something fairly active (I like to hike) then I have this 3-4 pound delicate weight swinging around from my neck. I normally have to have one hand free to help hold onto and control this expensive piece of hardware so it doesnt accidently slam down on a rock. I do sometimes carry the camera in a backpack, but this means that I cant take many spontaneous shots of wildlife as I am walking along.

What I am looking for is something that would hold the camera up against my body so its not swinging around freely, would enable me to keep both my hands free for scambling over rocks, but would still allow me to quickley bring the camera up into use with little fuss.

Am I simply looking for something that doesnt exist?

No they make something like that, a sort of criss-cross strap, I think with elastics or something, so it basically holds your body. They should have them at camera shops.

What I normally do is put an arm through the strap and swing the camera around back. This compromise is great for extended walking/hiking since the camera weight is not pulling forward on the neck. It's not an ideal situation if you're leaning forward, because the camera can tend to want to roll back around front.
In tough going where you're climbing over rocks and such, I'd suggest that the front isn't where you want the camera! I'm not aware of a strap that's specifically designed for this scenario, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

I've seen those also. Kind of like a holster where you can pull the camera out but it's still held in place while active. Check B&H, search using "holster".

Good luck!

If you can't find one at a camera store find a store specialising in high quality binoculars. My dad bought a strap much as you're describing for his fairly heavy pair.

Maybe a Lowepro Top Loader AW is what you are looking for. They will hang from a belt, your shoulder, or can be cinched to your chest. I have the Toploader 75 AW and it holds my D200 and 70-200 f2.8 without the hood, or anything smaller.

Check them out here
