Back in January 2006 I entered the Infrared image into a challenge and took first place with it. I said at the time that I will be doing more Infrared work.
I then bought the Nikon D70s specifically for that purpose and have continued to enter the images.
Tonight I got a comment from Greetmir-
"Beautiful, Judi ...
... a year ago you said you were gonna do some more IR ... some of us may still be waiting ... I know I am ..."
I replied to him that I have been doing more IR work but obviously he hadn't noticed. So it got me thinking. There may be others on here that are interested in more IR images. So I have decided to show my IR images that I have on this site, both challenge entries and non-challenge entries. I have listed them below.

So if you have any IR images that are on this site that you would like to show....or maybe you have some IR questions...then please feel free to post in this thread.

I simply used a Hoya R72 on the D70s. With the filter on I point the camera at the grass and set the custom WB to that. Then I remove the filter, compose & manually focus, replace the filter, take the shot using a tripod and remote.
In PS I switch channels in the Channel Mixer, apply any levels, curves, Selective Colour, Hue & Sat or whatever is needed for each individual image.

Hi Judi, i am a newbie in IR photography so i have some questions to ask to a more experienced IR photographer. Actually i have only take two pictures as a test.
I use a Hoya R72 on a D50 and i followed the steps you mentioned to get a customized WB. I again followed the same steps for postprocesing.
My question is, why did you get white trees while i get pink trees? Has to do with the preset WB?
See the pictures i take:
straight from camera (levels corrected)

after postprocesing
//img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/winger00/Acuario%20100%20lts/DSC_5667r.jpg?
Any comment will be wellcome.
Thank you very much in advance.

Anyone know where i can get a R72 in the UK?
I'm wanting a 72mm one, can't find one that size.
*Edit* I just found a B+W 89B from Cameras2u.com for £110! Yikes, i think i'll leave it for a bit.

Did you miss the "or whatever is needed for each individual image" part?
P.S. I love your shot.

yes. when you preset white balance to the grass, you're going to get slight variations in color depending on the time of day, the color of the grass, etc.. i've gotten color ranging from pink to yellow.
of course, i like the colorations. plain white trees seem rather boring to me...

I used to do some IR work including...
I would love to do some more of this type of photography, but the cost of an IR filter seems to be higher than I remember. Anyone know of a website where I can pick one up for less than $100?

Now that I think about it, I am not sure my Canon D10 can handle IR photography. Guess I need to investigate further.

i am pretty sure there is a filter on the sensor that blocks IR on the canon 10d. i saw once a place that would remove it for, or a lesson on how to do it yourself, but i'll leave that up to someone else.
buy a cheap eos film slr and get some IR film...

having the filter removed allows you to hand hold IR. doign it the way mentioned above requires nothing to be done to the camera. |

I've only got two posted here. I've got a couple more that I haven't processed yet. When I do I'll put them up.
I'm not too happy about the processing on this, but at the time I didn't know what I do now about processing.
This shot I'm very happy about.

I have done a lot of searching, and R72 filters in 72mm seem to be running about $100 plus. Guess I need to start saving my pennies.

A HA - i thought the length of exposure time needed to use one of the lens mount filters was more of a hassel than it was worth.

it sure can be. if you are out just taking photos and decide that something would look good in IR then it can be a pain in the ass to set it up and take it especially since you can't meter and have to trial and error. |
