I have a fun idea; I think! Let's have a two-stage-challenge. We'll call the first stage "choose me"; it will be like a "free study" challenge except the rules allow nothing; not even sharpen after resize, just resize and submit; and the rest of the game is played exactly the same until the results are out.
Now, when the three winning images are out and known, DPC will make them available online, (as raw or/and jpg format) for the second stage of the contest.
The second stage of the challenge is then started under "expert rules"; and it could be called "use me"; the interested participants will then have to download one of the three winning photos, and go out and take a photo of their own; and with "expert editing" come back with their submission which is a photo comprised from a winner from the first stage and one taken by the photographer himself.
Hmmm¡K I noticed that a number of the DPC community here are not receptive to change and like things the way they are; well, a little salt does not hurt.
Oh¡K maybe stage one could be an "Open" challenge and the second is for "Members" Æ’º

That's actually a pretty neat idea, though those who enter the first part would have to be willing to allow their pictures to be used for the second part. But just make that a condition of the challenge. |

I think it can be done! |

A variation on this would be to eliminate the first challenge, and instead just have the site provide three (or more) starting images, for which permission has already been obtained.
You should recognized, however, that this begs to be turned into a "digital art" contest, especially since compositing of two (or more) images is required. I believe it would take an exceptional amount of self-discipline on the part of submitters for this to not become a surfeit of surrealism. |

Could one really have a surfeit? Could be lots of fun as a challenge.

Please let's not turn this into a Worth1000 site. We already have expert editing, that should be enough for anyone who wants to get into digital art.

"I believe it would take an exceptional amount of self-discipline on the part of submitters for this to not become a surfeit of surrealism."
... and? ... the surfeit of surrealism is not a valid expression of art if it is proclaimed up front that anything goes?
I really don't understand the problem here ... Those who would like to participate, would ... those who did not want to could at least bash the ones they hated least with not so low scores ... LOL
... not everyone's cup of tea but ... so ... ?
In case you haven't figured it out yet, I would be in.

many here HATE the idea of digital art so they don't want the site to go down that road. |

For ONE challenge? ... you think this would taint us forever? ... LOL

Hey, that's my opinion, and I bet if this was done it would not end at one challenge.

So in part two, would both photographers get a ribbon? |

I'm not sure why the "surfeit of surrealism" is an issue, since we HAVE the expert ruleset in place now (if only temporarily) and it certainly has not turned into that. Of course, that one doesn't MANDATE multiple images, which this challenge would do.
We've certainly had a number of similar "ad hoc" events in the forums, where people have added to base images, sometimes sequentially, and they've always been fun... Anyway, I see this as being just a different twist for a specific expert-ruleset challenge, and an interesting one to boot.
Heck, you COULD just provide half a dozen base images and say "make your submission using components of two or more of these images" and THEN it would be pure Photoshop, no photography skills involved at all :-) This, of course, would be WAY off the usual DPC stomping grounds, and probably enrage a heck of a lot of people, but what-the-hey!
Variety is pretty much the spice of life, in my book at least :-)
