For those of you using a battery grip, does it really improves the feel of the camera?
I feel it really unbalanced specially when using the 580ex on top of it. I have really long fingers and usually one or two of them are always below the body of the camera making my hand very tired after a while.
Do you think I should buy the battery grip? battery life so far hasn't been an issue.

| I have one for my 10D, only because it looks cool.........no just kidding, the battery life is helpfull and it just feels right. |

I didn't think I needed one but so many people raved about having a battery grip so I bought the Opteka knock-off. I LOVE using it and for $50 (what I paid) you really can't go wrong. I prefer Canon products but I am happy with the 3rd party one.
Edit to add: I'd definitely recommend a battery grip...I can't imagine shooting without one. I love how I can quickly flip into portrait orientation and shoot away without the awkwardness.

I got the Canon one for my birthday and I love it with the 400D. Keep a decent supply of rechargable AA batteries and you're good to go. And the ability to switch over into portrait orientation is great.

I think that if I owned a Rebel, the battery grip would be a necessity. Having handled the 350D with and without the grip, it makes a monumental difference.

You've answered your own question: your fingers are long, they are getting tired, the standard-sized 400D is not a good ergonomic fit for you. The battery pack will help you there, no question about it. On the negative side, for just wandering around shooting-for-fun it's a lot of extra weight to be packing. Battery life really isn't an issue with these cameras in normal use: I have a backup battery for my 20D and I've never come CLOSE to needing to put it in. I just rotate the two batteries every now and then so they both see use and maintain peak charging capabilities.
My main beef against the 350/400 series rebels is that they are just too danged small; the 300D was OK, but the newer models feel tiny to me. It's the main reason I went with the 20D instead of the 350xt, even though the latter would have allowed me more leeway for glass.
