Today my domain registration expired and I didn't know it. Instantly, some bullcrap company baught my domain name and wont sell it back to me for less than $300 bucks. I didnt get a bill like I did in the past 5 years I owned the domain.
I would like to start a new webpage with a more professional look. I am not a web designer, anyone have any tips for services I could use to buy my domain, host it and design a page for me for reasonable price?
Thanks

I'm learning about website design as I go along. I would look at the Good Tutorials website. It has a lot of good ideas that you can look off of.
And by the way...I had the same thing happen to my domain when I was deployed. |

instantly? usually your domain registrar will hold onto the domain for at least 2 months after it expires and charge you extra to reinstate the domain.
if they've not informed you, then you can lodge a complaint with ICANN.
you should have had plenty of time, and you should have received notices ... at the very least, you're responsible to know when your domains expire.
but if you think that you're hard done by, go to ICANN ... they're the only ones who can intervene if you have a complaint.

well...
notinabox.us is available :)
could be worse if you like the domain name. Definitely too bad, it's clever. |

depending on your local laws, you can threaten to sue them for intellectual property right infringement (even if it doesn't work technicaly in your place it could still work as bluff, especially in the US!).
In my country, even if you didn't registered a trademark, the simple fact that you developped a website with a given, original, name and created some artistic content with it is enough to give you a right on the name. Someone else simply registering it is not allowed.

ICANN is the governing body for domain names they handle these issues thru the dispute resolution process.

Btw, you might want to remove the link from your profile, so that the "bullcrap company" doesn't get the hits :) |

it's usually protocol to hang on to the domains for 60 days or more after they've expired. domain names don't just drop off the system the day after ... it's a very long and very complex system to be able to buy used domain names.
if it expired 2 days ago, then i'm sure your registering company still has it. they may have a system where they POINT the domain to another company in order to generate revenue while they wait for it to expire.
contact your company and have a look in your hosting account. i'm sure there will be no problems with you re-registering it ... they may charge you more though.
if this is not the case, DEFINITELY follow the grandwazoo's directions and post a complaint with ICANN.
last piece of advice, if you get your domain back, move your registration to another company. these guys are obviously dodgy ...
