My fav is the Sigma 30mm f/1.4
After that
85 f/1.8 (don't own it yet, but shot with it)
70-200 VR
35-70 f/2.8
50 f/1.4
If I had to start all over again I'd get the 30, the 85 and the 70_200 first.

I am going to look at the Sigma AF 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC Macro
it uses the 72mm filters and is about $350

My fav is the 18/70 G ED IF for general walking around where there are people.
The 70/300 AF D ED works good for outdoor nature, animals and birds but is a bit slow (5.6 at the long end) but it is also very sharp and contrasty. With it not being IF, it is a bit of a problem to get it focused and zoomed as I want, when shooting manual focus, and the end turns when it focuses, so it is difficult to use with a polarizer. It makes up for it in low weight, image sharpness, and versitility.
Almost all of my macro is done with a 1975 model MF Micro Nikkor 55mm 3.5. I have no metering with it, but it gets excellent results and it was only about $ 70 US on eBay. The convienence of auto focus would be nice, but not necessary for what I like to shoot macro.
Good luck hunting,

| My favourite Nikon mount lens so far is the Sigma AF 24mm f/2.8 super wide II. It's very sharp, small, light, all-metal construction, and can be had for about $70 shipped on eBay. With the Nikon DSLRs it gives a very useful 36mm equivalent. It stays on my camera most of the time, but this may change as I have just bought the Nikkor 35/2 AF and the Nikkor 20/3.5 AIS. |

i think this is my next purchase (of course, i'm in the doghouse for getting the D200 but that's another story).
of every lens i have, i've used the kit (18-70) probably 70% of the time. maybe more. i lent it to a friend for a trip and i've been without it for a week. it's amazing how often i'm like "damn, i wish i had that back."
the 18-200 with the extra zoom and the VR would be excellent! |

My favourite all-purpose lens is Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED. It makes an excellent portrait lens, a fast "normal" lens, and a decent wide angle. Next is Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4.0G IF-ED, an excellent wide angle.
A great macro lens is Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR. |

| The 18-200 VR on my brother's D80 is getting me to seriously look at going over to the dark side. |
