Does the photo have to have anything to do with the actual acronym? Like, if mine was hypothetically called NASA does it have to have anything to do with space? Or should it be more like NASA: N____ A_____ S_____ A_____ and as long as it makes sense with the words we chose, anything goes?
02/24/2007 04:56:13 PM · #27
the photo is supposed to explain the acronym. by looking the image - the meaning of the acronym should become clear. if that's what you're getting at...

although i'd think if you use a common acronym folks will be looking for the common meaning in the image...

Yeah, thats what I figured, but if thats the case then theres no way I'm entering or voting. Guaranteed I won't get most images.

We could probably debate 'Acronym' vs. 'Initials' all day long. The fact of the matter (imho!) is that an awesome photo of 'DPC' or 'ATV' will probably beat out a so-so photo of 'RAM' or 'NASA' everytime.

I think it is great that you dropped in on this thread soley to give us this intelligent addition and contribution to the debate (and examples of acronyms).

Have a nice day.

And for those stuck for an idea ... This Acronym Dictionary (list) contributed by Judi. Thanks Judi.

OK fine, lets use that website as a guide... especially since CIA, FBI, and DPC are NOT listed!!! Nor is RAM, WAC,or NASA. Now THATS funny :-)

BTW - if you look up FBI and CIA in Merriam-Webster, they are referred to as abbreviations :-) And BTW2: synonym doesn't always mean "exactly the same as" (ETSA). Gotta love this english language (LTEL), aye?

Thanks again to SaraB who seems to have really hit the nail on the head (HTNOTH), and to RolandB for his encouragement (FHE), and also to Louis for his fine example (HFE). Now lets get back to making up "acronyms" (MUA)to go with the photos we want to upload (PWWTU) :-)

I gave that thread in good faith to help others get an idea of what to do for the challenge. You can sit there and belittle it or you can get off your butt and find something positive to say and help someone for a change.

I am sorry if I have taken your post out of context but I am annoyed that people tend to pick challenges apart and find anything negative instead of finding something positive.

An acronym is just that...take it how you see it.

A tree is a tree...it doesn't matter if it is part of or intact...it's still a tree.

Love or hate...so be it. Read it how you think and don't belittle others for their opinions. I am not directing this post at your personally Scholten...but to people in general.

If people spent as much energy in enjoying the challenges instead of pulling them apart this site would be so much happier.

Points well taken Judi. I'm new here and was trying to make sense of it all in my first post, after I thought I had posted a photo in error. And you can see what happened after that. I'm not sure I'll ever ask anything here again. I did appreciate the website you gave someone tho... THANKS! Its amazing! I never realized...!

Sholten...don't take it to heart. I didn't realise you were new here. Basically we have certain members who like to pick everything apart or just cause or continue arguments instead of making this a fun site. It is encouraged to ask when you have a question no matter how inane it might seem. What I was referring to was the continued need by some members to cause negativity.

As I said in my earlier post...I apologize if I have taken your post out of context...but I was a little frustrated by the reception of a post that was purely aimed at being positive and not negative.

So Sholten...welcome to the site and please ask away...but most importantly....have fun!!!

In the primeval days of journalism, when a "Blog" consisted of a daily newspaper column by the likes of Herb Caen, LOL stood for "Little Old Lady" as in "...and just when the LOL driving the red Mustang convertible ..."

oh dear ... back down the 'personification' road ...

an abbreviation is a shortened word or group of words. abbreviations are based on 2 or 3 letters from each word being included NOT just the first letter. eg:

what's = what is
TransCO = Transportation Corporation
dr = doctor

Originally posted by dictionary.com:

DPC is an acronym.
BTW is an acronym.
LOL is an acronym.
ROTFLMAO is an acronym.
NASA is an acronym.
FBI is an acronym.

so STFU! :)

(kidding, kidding ...)

i think all internet and instant messaging language can be included.

OK. Thanks. There were some very helpful responses received too, I must admit. Language can be such a confounding thing. Often there is a "common usage" meaning with a different "dictionary" meaning... or two or more dictionary meanings. And its all subject to our personal interpretations. So many words have multiple meanings while simultaneously language is constantly evolving... often making it all a moving target. No wonder we get confused! So I reckon we just take our best shots at communicating and try to do like you said... HAVE FUN! And then maybe, if we feel brave enough, ask questions when we need clarification. :-)

That's a contraction, not an abbreviation. BTW, have you ever noticed that even the abbr. for abbreviation is rather long, as is the word itself?

point taken ... "what's" is a contraction ... my bad.

And even "acronym" is an "acronym":

ACRONYM A Contrived Reduction of Nouns Yielding Mnemonics
ACRONYM Automatic Collocational Retrieval of Nyms
ACRONYM A Coded Rendition of Names Yeilding Meaning
ACRONYM Aroused Citizens Representing Oppressed New York Minorities

I bet everything is an acronym. :-)

Anyone ever play Acrophobia?? The fear of Acronyms Game??

They give you random letters (Acronyms) and you are supposed to make up words to go with them. Then people vote on the best one from the letter set given.

Example:

Given Letters: CCCC

You say: Creepy Crawly Crotch Critters

the given letters were an acronym for whatever it is you came up with.

This is what I have always believed an acronym to be "the first letters of the words that make up a saying or name (and I KNOW that acrophobia is not REALLY the fear of acronyms but that is what the game is called and that is what it is INTENDED to mean). hehe

So, WTH are we all complaining about?? hehe We all know the common acronyms used in chat: DPC, IMHO, OMG, WTH, LOL, TY, YQW, WB, and so on and so forth...

That is probably why Judi provided the link, they are common acronyms used in conversation. She probably figured some of us would like some ideas and wanted to help :) If anyone has not brushed up on them or they find themselves lost when voting, there they are, plain as day.

So, go shoot a picture, make a title, and just put up the first letters of the title in the title box. But, remember to KISS or no one is going to get it!! :-) LOL

I just thought some of you might have played that game and thought it might be an easy way of understanding what an acro is :)
