Yeah, looks like both BooBoo and The Poop Machine have it.

Bridgette had a little cough when we adopted her, now Lexi has a cough too. I've been reading online and looks like there are some homeopathic remedies for Kennel cough, but I'm a little afraid of them. Has anyone tried an over the counter remedy with success? Is there something you might recommend?

I realllllllllly don't want to pay another vet bill, especially since Bridgette just had a physical and is now scheduled for spaying.

I went back to the store where I bought my boxer and they gave me some medication for kennel cough for her. She came with kennel cough so they understood that they were obligated to assist in curing her of it.

I don't remember what the medication was, but she was completely over it in about six weeks. I'm a little skeptical of homeopathic remedies, not that they can't work, but for some things I prefer to use known medical remedies rather than 'old wive's tale' and 'witch doctor' cures.

edit to add: Since one was adopted then you might not be able to convince whoever you adopted it from to help with the medication. If that's the case, then try asking a puppy store what they use to cure kennel cough and try to find that medication at a pet store or a feed supply store. I've found that feed supply stores (for livestock) have a lot of products for dogs also at pretty good prices.

That's a good idea, Robert. I got Bridgette from a puppy store just 4 weeks ago. I'll call them to see if they will give us the medication -- or atleast advise something.

I don't know what you are paying for the spaying but check with your humaine society. They will know someone who does it for a lot cheeper. Some vets charge as much as $300 for something that should be no more than $80.

Yeah well if the vet charged 80 dollars he'd be 60 by the time he could afford that 6000 dollar Nikkor 200-400 VR.

LMAO also good advice. My vet wants $250 for it and I've been dreading writing that check. I hate to have them spayed anyway because it seems so invasive, but I know its the best thing for them. :/

GO to a vet for the cure. No, it's not cheap, but there is a vaccine for it.
I'd definitely have a vet confirm the illness, and then talk to the source of the new pup - apparently it's not a properly run facility if they h are infecting new pups with diseases.

So you might want to check with the vet on what other shots your dogs need!

Some charge the higher prices 'cause they know people want the best for their animals. There is absolutely no difference in quality or amount of pain.

I already had the new puppy checked by the vet (2 weeks ago) and her shot records were checked thouroughly. Everything is up to date. Unfortunately, she wasn't coughing much, maybe once a day when we got her and I didn't recognize what it was until the other dog started coughing too. :(

From what I've read, its a very common illness among dogs who are kept together - like in a puppy store and is rarely fatal, but can be serious if not treated.

Puppy store doesn't open for another hour - I will call them then. Hope they'll give us medication for free -- I really don't want another vet bill.

Obviously you've never had a first year vet tech stick a needle in your dog.

Now my dog shall laugh at you.

our puppy got it about the first week or two after she went to doggie daycare. the vet guessed that the vaccine just hadn't built up her immunity yet.

she also recommended a VERY small dose of children's robitussin for the coughing. i don't remember how much, but it depended on the dog's weight. perhaps you could google that?

really there wasn't much the vet could do other than vaccinate for it, so you probably don't need to go to see her. the robitussin worked great, although we only gave it to her once a day so she would sleep through the night.

good luck.

google "bordatella robitussin" (what a great jedi name!) and you'll get plenty of results that will help you out.

That's funny, Rob. Was just about to post.....

I just talked to the owner of the puppy store. He asked a lot of questions about how and how often the dogs are coughing and whether or not they had any icky looking snot. He says if they don't have snot - and they don't - then its most likely just a sort of doggy cold and not an infection....so antibiotics wouldn't help. He said his vet comes in on Wednesdays and I can bring Bridgette to him then for free and have her lungs checked, but in the mean time he says to give Robutussin CF (1/2 tsp for the little one and 1 tsp for Lexi) twice a day.

That's good, makes me feel better to hear he isn't the only one to recommend a cough syrup. He said it would supress the cough and keep their little throats from getting sore until the cold passes.

A puppy store?
Would never ever get my dog from a store, only directly from the breeder. Especially in Europe there is such a huge puppy scam going on. Unhealthy puppies, illegally imported from Eastern Europe. Some die during transport, many others die of diseases when they are with the buing family. Unhealthy breeding lines, breeding so much with the mother dogs that they die in the end because of weakness after giving birth after birth after birth.

I had a dog once that caught it every time we took her to any kennel. I tried many different holistic and conventional treatments and never had any luck other then the expensive pre$cribed antibiotics. As she got older (after 5 years) it wasn't as bad but she still got it. Wish I had a helpful solution for you. I was told some dogs are just more susceptible then others.

We got a puppy for my son for christmas, well he was already 5 months old so not a baby puppy. We got him from a pet rescue place that takes animals from the local shelter to adopt them out. He already had kennel cough before we got him so we left him there for about a week so they could treat him because we have another dog at hom. He still had it after a week and after reading up on it, it could take months to fully get out of their system so we brought him home. I don't remember what the vet was giving him but we had to get the prescrition filled a few times. They also suggested a childs dose of Robitussin (he was about 40lbs.) when the cough got really bad, which it did. He finally got over it after a few weeks and our other dog managed not to get it. But I sure felt bad for him at times, it got pretty rough. It also turned out he had some kind of bacteria for which they ended giving him a dewormer. Poor little guy, who knows what happened to him in that shelter. :( Luckily, the rescue place was picking up the tab for all the vet visits and medication since he was sick when we got him. Though we did pay $100 adoption fee for his vaccinations and neutering.

But he's happy and healthy now and is running the household. :)
