Hey - just popping around and looking at the competition. Let me just say this - I with ya! The challenges lately have been tough for me to get into -- and it's cold and miserable 9 days out of 10. However, just keep the challenge in your mind and let the "CHALLENGE" be a little job that you need to do for that week ...
Creative people don't always get assignments that suit their strengths, but that's why they are called "challenges" ... As the week gets closer to the deadline, gather your accumulated ideas and come up with something keeping in mind how much time you have availabel of couse.

Sorry for invading your thread but I am just being friendly and hopefully my 1.5 cents isn't chucked out the window.

I was a little disgruntled with the fact NOW we get an ice shot after all my ice images during the ice storm and all. Now we near 60 degrees, everything is melted and soggy and my windows are open (loving that!)

However, hehe My son broke off a really cool looking ice cicle the other day before I had a chance to shoot it and I stuck it in the freezer till I could get the studio set back up. I am going to play around with it and see what I can get. But I have a different idea I may end up using instead.

Love isn't doing to badly. At least I'm back in the 5s. I was definately hoping for better than that though.

John, of course we do want to do our best on all the challenges. That is the ideal. Week 1 was my personal best and we still lost. That kinda took the air out of my tires, so to speak. If we don't get a win in this next one, we will be out of the running. There is only 5 weeks and we lost 2 of them! Even if the challenge subject doesn't interest us we should at least try. Even a weak shot will give us more points to the total. We are up against some seriously heavy hitters on the first 2 weeks. How can we compete against them when most of us are new to this WPL Thing. Basically, we are learning the ropes this time around and if we stick together, maybe we can beat those guys in the long run.
I think we can do it. We need to work smarter and harder to get better. We need to get together on a chat somewhere and discuss pictures that are NOT entries and see where our weak points are.
As a group we need to discuss more. Get together for idle chat and really get to know each other. If not for this WPL but maybe for the next one we will be stronger.

T..well said!!! Now we need to agree on a chat program. I have Yahoo (got2teach) and I just activated Gmail talk (deborah DOT sterner AT you know the rest), me and asim were talking the other night.

I have an ICQ account but haven't installed it since the last format.
I have Yahoo and MSN on my system now.
I haven't used any others but will be willing to try one out as long as it isn't anything associated with AOL.
MSN live is the one I use primarily. I can show my friends my images without giving them away.

Maybe we can get everyone on the same page and schedule a chat night a week. We can bring a couple images for discussion as if we were a local camera club getting together in person. We could get an IRC chat room going (been so long since I did that, Im not sure I remember how to do it) I also have headphones with a mic if we want to implement a voice chat. That would be fun! Im sure if we research it, we could find something we all can agree on.

Deb and I checked out yahoo chat and it also has photo swap and conference ability. we can't swap in the conference that we found but it would be cool to get everyone together for a chat.

So go install yahoo chat and join us.
Lets figure out the best day and time when we can all get together at the same time! This is going to be so much fun!

I went to the beach on the old Lake Erie on the way home from work to shoot some ice. It was a little sunny and I didn't have to give my wife a ride home. This weekend is supposed to be rainy. Thu. night is below freeze so there may be some ice left along the shores of large bodies of water.

Then there is my favorite ice on a nipple, pipe nipple of coure, like the ones at Home Depot store.

riiiight! Pipe nipple....

HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION
Let's say if in the middle of Summer there was a contest and you could win $100,000-US. If you can come up with a way to promote ice in a photo you win (your odds are 1 in 5). What would you do?

Some may go out and buy 500 Lbs. of ice from a Hotel/Deli/Ice Cream store and fill you Hot-tub with it? Some may do a Macro-shot of just one ice cube and a model in a Hot tub. Or do both?
Shoot an Ice Cream Sunday with real cubes of ice in it.
Shoot a cactus indoor/outdoor type, with ice cubes near it?

WORDS TO PICTURE
What messages/stories or titles does it suggest?
1) If a photo gives itself a similar name you give it, you've succeeded in putting an idea/concept into a picture. 2) If it attracts attention of any kind, WOW, etc., from several different types of folks, you've succeeded in appealing to the emotions of the masses. Cha-ching, You're a win! 3) If you know when to switch gears or if you don't quit, you've got the style of a winner, keep at it till "preparation meets opportunity" - Roosevelt. (a.k.a luck)

MONITOR ADJUSTMENTS
Just a tip/idea I thought of on the way to work. It hasn't been tested, yet. If you're trying to imitate the technique of a past Top-10 DPC photo or just having similar colors. And you're not sure how it will look on other monitors. Just match your photo sid-by-side to a past winner on any web site. Regardless of how bad it looks on your monitor, if it matches a Winner, you know the colors are up to par.

I really like your hypothetical situation. I will have to keep that in mind when I shoot. It will help motivate. I should make myself some sort of poster to post in the studio that reflects that.
However, I won a $600 prize on an image that I didn't particularly like to well. LOL It actually turned out looking really good in a frame!

Most Food photogs will use acrylic ice cubes so they have time to work without the ice melting. My Death image had ice in it. Hehe
I don't think the voters got the image till they read the story.

Okay here is one more, how about an ice cube with a red light on it, on your chest, near your heart, and title it "Cold hearted".

I'm really excited about my recent Ice Hunt last night. I think I brought in 8-9 whopper walleyes from Lake Erie. It will be hard to select which to put back into my outtake pond.

Diamonds are also considered 'ICE'
Death could also be 'putting someone on ice'

I'm just getting caught up on these posts. My husband had a heart procedure done and I got behind on so much around here that I'm just now, starting to breathe again. BUT.....I DID manage to get my entries in for the team. Albeit, they weren't well thought out, but hey, they didn't seem to do too badly anyways! *grin*

You know, I have weeks where NOTHING comes to mind to shoot for a challenge and if it does, it's usually out of my league to shoot it! *sigh* But, I have to say that after a week of scores that really SUCK, I find myself battling to want to try to enter a challenge that I have no ideas for the following week. So, Brian, I understand what you were saying there. It's HARD to make yourself take a shot that you know will do badly just to say that you've got an entry in for the week. AND.......I equally understand that a 4 is better than a 0. But, somehow, it seems at times, that I'd rather NOT enter than receive that 3.9!!! :) It's kind of a blow to the good old ego there.

Colorcarnival, I know what you were hitting at there as well with your original statement. I read Brian's commment and saw where you were coming from on that one. I saw where Brian was coming from too. And, I know what it's like to have a really hair raising week and just take everything "off kilter" through being tired. You certainly DO need your vacation and some R & R! You deserve it!!!

John, as for you.............you didn't happen to get hit on the head by some ICE did you?????!!!!! *Evil grin, wink* I think you've got ICE on the brain right now!!!! *smirk* The ICE ideas are just FLYING from ya! I guess you're going to be shooting ICE, aren't ya? *wink*

As for me........hey, I've got an ICE pack on my head right now from a horrid headache and I may go down a Smirnoff ICE shortly. I may not lose my headache, but I won't care that I have it!!

I already have my entry done and submitted for the Free Study. And, this time, I am going with an artistic shot with a message behind it that's very poignant to me and I hope others will see as such. It's meant to be an artistic statement. As for the current challenges for WPL......hey, hopefully, between now and next Tuesday, I'll hit something that will work.

Ok, I'm off to curse at my Street shots score and my Hate challenge scores!

Thanks Tlemetry, for your great comments. You have a good workflow. I've always done "Save-to-the-web", as in a dpc-tutorial. I didn't quite get your suggestion to work. Could you repeat the steps?

Photointerest, you talking about me having ice on my head. I sure hope you get a good closeup of that "Ice pack" on your head, maybe a high angle shot from the side-towards the back, or any side, or a low angle. With a single light aimed at the ice pack.

I also hope your headache goes away and your husband gets better.

I've already did my ice shots, I was just giving free ideas away to inspire the team. This was the first time I actually took them Wednesday evening, six days before the deadline. I will submit on Saturday, haven't finished editing and uploading. It ain't done till it's uploaded. Even then you could swap it out with a different one as many times as needed before the deadline.

Just inside the entrance to our Shipping Dept. there is a sign for motivation (one of the many), saying TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More. I think that may an acronym, although not well known.

By the standards here you could do an excellennt Sunset reflected in a body of water or ANYTHING GOOD, and title it "T.G.I.F".
02/23/2007 10:17:50 AM · #317
BTW, Photointerest, also keep the Smirnoff ICe in the photo, too.
You could title it "Ice packs for hangovers"

John,
Meet us in Yahoo chat tonight and I will walk you thru it. ;)
Everyone but you and Baco Have joined is in the evenings for team bonding. We're missing you guys! I think most of us will be around tonight if you wanna join in and share stories and ideas.

Also, I'm wondering if you have any experience with hot shoe flash on a bracket? I'm having a wee bit of difficulty getting even light. Would love to chat about it tonight.

Chat with you soon, I hope!

Okay, I'll try to set it up tonight. I suppose it's appropriate for a Motley Crew of rockers to become Yahooligans. I hope some one is making some virtual drinks like in the "dpc bar".

What time are you guys going to be there? Tonight is the night I usually try and squeeze in some pictures lol.

I was hoping we wouldn't all go on vacation at the same time, it would not be good for business and customers. We should, somehow keep track of that, just in case. I suppose if that happens you can't fire the volunteers.

You're Hired! Payoff at the end. Rally up the enthusiasm, tonight's last chance to enter something for this Week-4. If not enough players show up in real sport games the match is forfeited.
We are not team suck!

The opposing team has had one non-contributer, we always have a chance.

"Street Photography", "Love II", "Hate"
The zeros may have entries in "Love II", "Hate"

If correct, Week-3, SO FAR...

that's all i have for that week - the street photography. This week i have one in acronymns and one in Low Key

I am waiting to see what tonight's is going to be. Not really sure if I am going to have time to do the furniture but I may try it today.

I will be gone starting March 1 and back on the 10th!!!! WHEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH I need out.

BTW - John - I am glad I left a comment on your street scene in the challenge. It was a SCREAM and should have scored higher.

02/27/2007 01:40:13 PM · #325
I bet you can't wait to go bicycling in the snow.
Enjoy your vacation, The Tue.-Tue. Challenge for the next week will be anounced after midnight today. That one ends Tuesday the 13th of March. You may hav a chance to enter that one. I have always taken my camera on every vacation, there may be unique or unusual photo opportunities.

I noticed there are ONLY 5 weeks of challenges, after that there are the playoffs. I don't know if every team is in the playoffs.
