That is really cool maybe he can make the world see the things differently.

If I recall correctly, there was an Australian film called Proof that was about a blind photographer..... starred Hugo Weaving alias 'Agent Smith' from the Matrix and a plethora of other films.

too bad they don't show us any of his pictures.

OK, I mean, seriously...partially playing devils' advocate here, but what the hell is the point of a blind guy taking photographs? He can't see what he's photographing, and he can't tell how they turned out. Are the exhibits going to be all of his photos displayed in sequence (possibly useful, but how interesting could it be? (thank you, autofocus) or is his buddy going to pick them out...I can see the conversation:

Did this turn out?
Nope.
How about this one?
Nope.
What about this one?
Nope.
.
.
.

I mean, I'm all for people overcoming their inadequacies, but wouldn't he be a bit more useful in an audible medium? Being nothing but supportive is just encouraging him. Hopefully this will inspire equally underqualified people to excel in other fields...blind air traffic controllers, deaf music reviewers, astrophysicists who failed grade 10 math, colorblind interior decorators, manic depressive motivational speakers, midget bouncers, albino swimsuit models, ...the list goes on. Up with mediocrity...

WELL! I was just curious as to WHAT he takes pictures OF. They just did a report with no supporting evidence... oh whatever, I give up.

Well, I'll bet Buddy is, too. He can't see them, why should you get to?

I am never posting in the forums again. That did it. I am sick of the aggressiveness. You can piss off.

This thread is hilarious. Thanks folks for the laughs.

Is there a manic depressive motivational speaker in the house? We need one here.

I thought this would be a mildy humourous and light thread when I posted the original story. It turned out to be yet another site of potential civil war. Who knew?

Wow, get a grip people. So a blind guys want to take pictures, all the power to him. Wasn't Beethoven deaf?
06/26/2003 06:54:38 PM · #14
Nah, they messed the facts up on that one. He was lactose intolerant, not deaf.

James, the article said that he takes photos of places where he hears something interesting. I heard that blind people develop a much better sense of hearing. I could imagine that an exhibition of his photos would be rather interesting. The photos show something we seeing people probably ignore when we walk by. They visualize for us what he hears. Sure, most of the times the visual quality won't be very astounding, but you know... art is not always about how to get your flower shot crisp ;-)

P.S.: I agree that your insults were not funny. Sorry.

And I'd say that a few people here are taking things a bit too seriously. I read the article, yes. I know that he's taking pictures of things which sound interesting. It's also kind of like a deaf person taking a tape recorder to a baseball game, recording it and then playing it back for people who already have satellite TV. Being blind doesn't automatically give you the right to be taken seriously 100% of the time...

Well, folks, why not do a shoot with your eyes closed and shoot based on hearing interesting sounds. And then submit that to the Speed challenge. Best of luck, since you're going to need it :) You could also submit it to the letter B and title it Blindly Taken, doubt you would get brownie points for that though from the voters.

I'm with Jimmy and Jak on this one.

Me? I thought it was great he was taking pictures. That's why I posted the article. I think the insensitive comments are quite inappropriate. But, as usual, YMMV.

No. It's not uberly serious. If you don't see a point in his photography then ok. But I don't think it's very cool to make fun of him.
As I said, I see a point and I would be rather interested to see his photos. I would be interested in what he photographs because he choses the subjects from a completly different perspective. He probably recognises details I don't recognise. Wouldn't it be interesting to you to see what he "sees" with his sense of hearing?

Journey: A single photo wouldn't get many brownie points from me either. But in an exhibition you see a series of photos and they form a more complete image. And I heard that there exists photography outside of DPC ;-) Not every photo has to be taken to compete for a placement.

People these days are way too oversensitive about crap. Giant society of WIENERS!!! This PC crap is getting ridiculous, to the point of nauseum. Grow some skin people. Get out in the world and live. It is not that nice out there.
Good for him for taking of pictures of stuff that SOUNDS interesting. If it makes him happy, cool! But I have to agree that why should that be called art? Or why is it to be any more special than some 2 year old running down the street clicking the button? Always hear how the handicapped don't want to be treated any different or special, but when something comes up likes this and someone makes an un PC comment, people whine? Or then it is ok for special treatment?
I think after seeing one exhibition, you probably have seen the whole thing. Heads cropped off (my Mom's favorite shooting style), overexposed, out of focus photos. Nothing special, except a blind man...wait!...sight deficient person (make him asexual also) person took it. WHOOPIE!!
As said before, try that here and see what ya get.

if a person with bad eyesight took some bad, or totally unexceptional pictures, would anyone care? no.

so why should it be news if someone with even worse eyesight does it? it's just a matter of degree.

the only thing that would make it any different is if there's something special to the pics themselves. and since we arent being shown them we haven't anyway of knowing if this is the case.

I̢۪m a firm believer that anyone can take a good shot (it's easy to win challenges when you̢۪re shooting with a d-10 even a blind guy -look at magnetic's shot's)

I guess you never heard of Beethoven. I guess you think a deaf guy writing music is pretty dumb and probably doesn't deserve to be called art. It is precisely because of reactionary thought processes like yours that we need affirmative action. It has nothing whatsover to do with political correctness; it has every thing to do with equal opportunity.

DING! WE HAVE A WINNER! what else is there to say? Spot on, Chap.
And Beethoven wasn't deaf from birth and through his whole life, now, was he? If I remember....No.
and affirmative action only hurts those it is suppose to help. Ask Clarence Thomas, he'll tell ya.

Equal opportunity for blind photographers...stop it, you're killing me here. Where's the Monty Python skit? Too silly! I'll bet if he came at you with a banana you'd see it different...
