Obviously for the ICE challenge, i want to make some fake ice but dont know where to start. Either plastic, some sort of gelatine would be best. Anything i can think of isn't completely clear. Thoughts?

You could probably use unflavored/colored gelatin. Most ice isn't completely clear anyway.. it takes special techniques to get that.

I cant use the store bought plastic icecubes, I dont need icecubes. I dont wanna get too specific cuz it has to do with what i wanna shoot. I cant find any recipes around. I want some kind of clear/almost clear gelatine that holds its shape, almost a rubbery consistency.

The weird stuff stores around here are selling fake snow... it's 'snow in a can' or something like that. I've seen it in stores like Discovery, Spencers, toy stores, etc. (yay mall stores!) They're small and cheap, so that maybe would work?

If you live in a city, look under catering and enetertainment in the yellow pages and see if you can find an ice sculptor. They would know about getting 300lb cakes of clear ice.
When ice is made that needs to be clear, they blow small bubbles thru the water, and the little bubbles carry all of the air to the top, and out of the ice so it is clear when it freezes.
You may want to have a look at clear unflavored gelatin at the grocery store. It's used to make jelly, and by making clear jelly by the label directions, you may be able to fake the ice.

Mmm the geletin your talking about is the jello stuff right? It needs to be firm, cant fall apart. I dont want real ice for this it wont work well. I wish i could explain better what i have in mind. I need to make a icicle, so fake snow wouldn't work.

Clear liquid acrylic resin which hardens when you add the hardener? Like we used to put things inside and make pen holders out of? You could make a mould in like plasticine or something then line it with plastic wrap and away you go ...

Erm ... Dunno how large you need it ... Clear epoxy cement? ... Clear Silicone?

Maybe hot glue? You could grease an ice tray, squirt hot glue (from the gun) into it and let it dry. Won't be completely clear.

Sugar glass?

Acryllic methinks, like their shards ... I don't think they would rent sugar glass ones. The sets are rentable. Nor do I think people would pay 120.00 for sugar glass ...

No no, I meant sugar glass as another suggestion and something that's easy to make :)

Then again, I see that it needs to be rubbery, so I guess sugar glass is out...

I haven't tried it YET, but it sounds pretty easy!

If it only needs to look like ice, what about doing something with some plastic wrap.

How about a glue gun? There is glitter glue, and the base of THAT stuff is quite clear. I assume it comes as clear glue without the glitter, too.

Or perhaps other glues... make a mold, pour in the glue and let it dry? Or dry a blob the sculpt it.

You could always carve an icicle mold out of Styrofoam stuff and then freeze/create whatever material you like inside?

Have you tried freazing distilled water?

Not so sure, but it kind of makes sense that if the minerals are out of the water, that maybe the ice will be clearer.

Sugar glass is simply sugar cooked to the hard crack stage and them poured out and set...The trick would be depth, the thicker the mass is, the less firm it will be..like you could do shards relatively easily, but cubes not so much...
The key would be to take it off the heat before the colour starts to turn a carmelization occurs...
And any hot lights will melt it pronto...

I'm guessing there are easier ways :)

Also, I think boiling it for a while first drives out the dissolved gasses and makes the ice clearer and without bubbles.

My suggestion if you want a fake icicle would be to try going someplace like Michael's craft store and see what they have, maybe in the beading stuff, or the wedding stuff or in the floral arrangement stuff. You might find something that will be close enough to fake it.
