You think your photo "deserves" a 5 or 6?? This is probably what I understand least about this site.....Don't the voters determine what the photo deserves?

Well said.

That might be so...but there's no telling what the voters will vote. I'm rather new to this forum, but I am detecting a pattern or voting behaviour. Now if you just want ribbons, you have to take the picture the way the voters want to see it. But you can also stay true to yourself and photograph whatever the hell you want!! as long as it MTC :-)

Hmmm, I don't think I like your tone. :-)

Personally, picking a title to go along with a photo is the worst part of entering a challenge for me. After being here awhile, you learn that using words from the description is usually a score dropper. I don't know why (although this thread probably explains a little of that) but it just does. So I tend to go out of my way to come up with something different, even if having that 'word' as part of the title is perfect and totally appropriate.

When voting, photos come first for me. Titles don't hold that much weight for the most part, unless they are clever or witty or totally relevant or if they just make a big ol' lightbulb go off in my head, then it might push up the score a smidge. If they don't, it doesn't effect my vote at all. I'm looking at the picture in relevance to the challenge, the technicals, the emotions (or lack thereof), the originality.... that sort of stuff. I'll go out of my way to figure out the connection if I have to. Sometimes, it's just not there.

I'm sorry, but shoehorning a photo to fit the challenge by means of a title is not in the spirit of DPC IMO

Come off it... they can't all be shoehorns. Don't be so quick to judge and take a second look.

Some people hate shooting the obvious, too, and since the title is a legitimate part of your entry, a little guidance there can help make a subtle image less obscure.

I think for me personally, the difference is between a 'little guidance' for a 'subtle image', and a title that has to be there in order to give me any connection to the challenge. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the subtle and creative shot. The shots that are there just because people want feedback should be placed in the monthly free study or in the portfolio/forums.

In any case, it's good to see that most people here take things said in good faith and try to expand on the topic instead of reminding us that they paid money to be here and they can do whatever they want. You know what? I'm not a paid member and I can do whatever I want too. Seems like that comes for free.

did you read my earlier posts?

it said about the same thing you're saying. i spent quite some time making my photo, deliberately not used the word hate in my title cause I wanted to get the feeling across with the photo...not the title.

Sorry Puckzzz, the second half of my post was not directed at you. I was just stating my thoughts on challenge titles & photos.

The 'American' comment just struck me as a bit humorous and wanted to quote it. :)

Titles are essentially given equal weight to the photograph - as a site default during submission to a challenge, an entrant who may not want one, will find it impossible or difficult to submit without it. This fascination with a title for everything is ultimately poetic, but in practice mostly quaint, bordering on inane, often implemented as a shoehorn or Romantic ideal, sadly it is firmly ingrained into the site.

"I HATE not drinking a YooHoo with my cheese puffs."

This was the title of an entry I was pursueing for the challenge.

But, alas, during the shoot in my little studio/garage/laundry room/tool shed, I got thirsty and hungry.

I am weak. I hate that about myself.

Fair enoguh, but I agree to some extent with the OP, I believe that the photo should really reflect an honest effort to portray an idea that's consistent with the challenge. I don't care for "generic" photos that could easily be put into any challenge and then have a title that tries to make the fit. An example is a great photo of a sunset and then a title that says "Love this time..." in the the love challenge and the same photo with "Hate end of the day..." in the hate challenge. I thought there was alot of this in the School Days:Bio challenge. Too many cute pictures of animals or flowers that really didn't portray much about "School Days".

Just my opinion obviously, the voters do decide, that's the way it works here and that's ok.
