There wasn't much thought in the taking of it - I just thought it was a cool looking plane. Love the colour of it. I could have tried a lower angle - maybe I will if we head back up there again.

I can't get any closer, I'm trying to shoot through a chain-link fence, and have my zoom out as far as I can without enabling digital zoom.

I'd forgotten my tripod at home, I'll have to remember that next time.

Lea, I liked the colors there, too. maybe a bit more contrast/saturation and some gradients would do good, and you don't ahve to come back to choose a lower point:) you can remove the background, insert a new one and also change point of view a bit in perspective correction in file/transform/perspective correction.

I have a great magazine where they took a shot exactly like the one you have and changed it a lot and it's a great tutorial. I'll post the name of the magazine when I get home later tonight.

Heh. That's how I felt about my music entry, and then it got a 5.4. And the 5 commenters averaged 7.4! Talk about finding the right niche audience. :)

Kashi: I left a longish comment before I saw your further postings. So just take my suggestions on what to shoot as ideas for next time. :) But the processing things could still be useful.

Everyone: it's been a while since I've posted unsolicited advice, so here ya go. Use the lowest ISO you can get away with. High ISO is a last resort when you just can't get the shot otherwise, but it always produces noise. Depending on the camera, maybe a LOT of noise. My camera's pretty much useless at ISO 400 and not great at ISO 200. Just because the camera is capable of a given ISO doesn't mean it takes good pictures using all of them.

For a standing object in sunlight, even without a tripod, you can probably use ISO 100 and a shutter speed of 1/60s, 1/100s, or even faster.

Good advice, Jeff. Where I live now that often means the lowest ISO I can use is 400 - when we have gray days, we have really dark gray days. I've learned to embrace the noise. :-) Actually I've learned I'd best purchase Neat Image soon. I also like to shoot in town at night and will shoot at 1200 or so (because I don't carry a tripd). In those instances, the noise is simply going to be inherent to the photograph.

Your comment - especially the example of the Curves adjustment - was VERY helpful. Thank you.

Now - about the ISO 400 - I'd been taking pics of a helicopter just a moment before (blades going) and was getting better looking pics with the higher ISO. I should have reduced it when I switched subjects, but didn't think about it at the time (I'll blame the 4-yr old by my side).

This is the big problem with digital cameras, each interpret ISO in a different way. When it was film, ISO 400 would be the same for most cameras. Now, due the software and sensors, the ISO rating only applies to that camera. Most cameras tested have ISO ratings that vary between 25-50+. So, just experiment with your camera and then decide when and where to use an ISO that does what you want, not what you think will please everyone. If you use a high ISO and get the picture you want, then that's the one to go for!!

i've been shooting with a higher ISO because of the lighting conditions in san francisco and oakland. if i'm out on the streets, i have to get the shot fast and the lighting is always a little crazy.

i'm new to NI and i may be over doing it but i'll get it under control soon enough.

i'm off to shoot trees now.

'ow's this then -
Working in a house by the woods. Take camera to work. Furiously sand down pug/spakkel/filler/sparkel in drywall/plasterboard, creating loads of dust. Go for walk in woods with camera while waiting for the dust to settle. Return to drywall/plasterboard and apply second dose of pug/spakkel/filler/sparkel, only to realise by about 10 pm that I wasn't going to do as much as I'd hoped, so come home and download pics. Open dpc to check challenge etc and see that it's minimal editing so they needed to be jpegs. Bollocks.

When I used film I rarely dropped below ASA/ISO 200. With Fujifilm, ISO 400 gave lovely grain and still caught the detail.

Now, I use an ISO I think will do what I want. Since getting rid of the Canon 30D and getting the Pentax K100D, I have been using old M42 lenses and manual settings. My photos look different, no autofocus, just me and the camera. Hopefully will get some Macros soon to show,

Bad news! Perhaps, a little more preparation?? Or, more work and no challenges!

Glad to hear it!

I heard from JerseyGenie this morning. She broke her tibia close to the knee....

Really bad place for a brake. This is going to be a major inconvenience for quite a while. So sorry JerseyGenie.

After day 1, no less, so it should trend upward from here. Maybe I'll finally get another 6!

After all the care you gave Jeanie, maybe an angel will smile on your Hate entry and give you a reward.

OK, I'll sue you! Do you have a lot of money?

This is a really good question, Bob. In the court case I am still on, someone is suing a guy for multi-millions, and he has already had to sell his home and mortgage his future to pay his legal fees to defend himself. I don't know how the plaintiffs expect to extract any money from this guy. And I know the plaintiffs are paying a bundle for legal fees too, because they have a VERY high-profile lawyer. Boy, I sure hope I turn out to be one of the alternate jurors, so I don't have to make this decision.

OUCH. My older son broke his tibia right at the ankle back in October. He didn't need surgery, thankfully, as it was just a minor break. He still has pain in that ankle though (cast came off on Dec. 15th).

Speedy healing to her !
