OK so I have your attention, I came across this on another photography web forum.

"The UK Government is about to propose restrictions on photography in public places which could make street photography and documentary photography against the law. These proposed changes to the law could result in photographers having to apply for ID cards in order to take pictures in a public place."

There is a petition to try and stop this (for British citizens only)

Link to petition

Please sign up and stop this madness

Then wouldn't they also need to remove all of the "Public watchers" cameras that are mounted all over London?

I vaguely agree with the petition. However, there is no legislation current or planned to outlaw photography. The petition has been somewhat over-egged.

There doesn't seem to be any such proposal on any official, or press channel. I signed the petition as a preemptive protest, but I really can't find any mention, reputable or otherwise, of these restrictions you're talking about.

The person who created the petition has this page up, which details more about what the petition is in protest against and why. I'm gonna ponder this a bit before signing...

With our modern digital cameras an tripods, authorities get overly scared of technology. Are they doing this with real needs to. There are more ways to catch child molestors or other potential criminals. Innocent Photographers shouldn't be harrassed. Selling ID's may produce an income for them, but many times permits for guns don't do a background check as they should.

There has to be a balance of freedom, rights, and the safety of ourselves. It's a shame that people, on both sides, overreact at times. Put youself in both shoes. I would not hesitate on registering in NYC to use a tripod, I would just hope there wouldn't be a fee involved.

To be quite honest with you, i dont think an ID badge is a bad thing. If it means people have to be checked out prior to given a so called license, then i am all for that.

If they make the prequesites unrealitic for your average photographer then perhaps a rethink is in place.

If you have nothing to hide, whats the problem ?

It is a bit of a bogus petition - there is no proposed law! The petitioner seems to have only a semi-grasp of the issues at hand.
