I went to my meeting with the Chief tonight so we could discuss all the areas I am willing to train as a volunteer. One of the medics that was on scene at the accident I shot pics of was there and mentioned to the Chief that I do photography. The Chief got pretty excited - said he could use some good shots of their runs for training and recruitment purposes. So, not only will I start training for my Fire I and EMT I, I will also be their official (volunteer) photog.
The Chief is going to get me driving the ambulance, as there are a certain amount of hours required as part of training and said to bring the camera along. The next EMT I course isn't until fall, so I cannot do any hands on rescue until I complete it. But I can get my field training in on everything else, including forest fire training.
If you can't tell, I'm pretty geeked right now :D |

Yeah um we recently had a thread on that Photographer who doesnt work for the fire department but was given a Fire Department Photographer Badge....... Hes like possibly facing 10 years for photographing the scene of a dead police chief!
One of their claims is that he "WORKS" for the fire department and is selling the images. He doesnt work for the fire department and he sold the images to the news media....

well if you are only CLAIMING to be, but not working for them that is the first problem. Had he said he was shooting as a freelance I doubt he would be in trouble. The Chief did say that any photos taken under the position with the Fire Dept could not be sold to the media. |

Well for this guys case he is claiming freelance and the police department is saying he works for the fire department. If you work for them then yeah u cant sell them. But he doesnt work for them and he is not employed or payed by them. The police are just mad that he sold a pic of their dead chief to a newspaper and if they could execute him they actually most defintly would!
Outside of all that good luck hope its fun!

Electrical, Grease, and combustion ignited fires are not affected by temperature very much in that direction. While 400+ degree heat will tart a fire easily -20 doesnt do much to prevent many kinds of fires. |

every summer Alaska has huge wild fires. The area I live in was hit by a really bad on in 1996 in which over 70,000 acres burned

Congratulations. Looks like you're gonna make it in Alaska!
I hear those that make it the first year usually stay a long time.

That's great news. It is good to hear that the ice on the roof disaster is over, and things are going your way now!
All the best to you in your new photog hat.
