I apologize for bringing up yet another of these threads, but this is my first time covering an actual event, and I just want to make sure that I'm on the right page, pricing wise.
This coming weekend, I am shooting for a gentleman both days, probably for an hour each time. He is hosting a celebration for a family member, the first day at a local restaurant, the second at his home. In both cases, he wants shots of the family member, the guests, some candids, some portraits. It all seems pretty standard, and I̢۪m excited/nervous as all heck!
From this, he wants to order prints from me, because he stated that he didn̢۪t have time to go out and order them, pick them up, etc. right now. However, he has also expressed interest in getting a CD with all the images, so that he can have them for whatever use later on.
I have indicated to him that I charge $50 per hour as a shooting fee. Print rates are: Wallets: $4 (8 wallet size prints/sheet); 4x6: $3; 5x7: $6; 8x10: $12; 11x14: $20; 16x20: $35
For the CD of images, I was thinking of charging an additional $100. This is really the place I̢۪m unsure, however. Is that enough, too much?
The one final thing that I was unsure about was, I was invited to join them for lunch as their guest during the shoot at the restaurant. My initial feeling is that it would not be professional to accept, and I should thank him and politely decline. But maybe I have that all wrong?

You don't want to have lunch with them unless he/they are already friends of yours and it would be natural that you are part of the party. Which doesn't seem to be the case from what you have described.

Thanks Bear, that's what I thought.
Bump for any other advice!

So basically, you're talking about 2 hours of work for $100.00, and if he wants delivery of images on a CD to do with as he pleases, you are doubling your price. That sounds about right to me. That's what we used to do: double the shooting fee in cases like this.

everything sounds fine, except you might be a little light on your print prices. if what you have here is what you quoted him, then no big deal. going forward, you might consider bumping them up a bit. once you spend the time it takes processing, printing (especially if you're sending them out and picking them up), packaging, etc., you'll know you need to factor in a little more to account for the time you'll have just handling the fulfillment...
have fun! |

You've got the right idea, but as others have stated, your prices are too low - $3 for a 4x6 is fine, expecially since it costs 29 cents and needs little PP work. Wallets need to be more - for some reason these are usually overpriced IMO.
5x7 and 8x10 are fine. The 11x14 and 16x20 need to up in price - $35 for the 11x14 and $65 for the 16x20.
Your hourly fee is way low, IMO. I shoot such things at $90/hour 2 hour minimum (to account for travel, to make it worthwhile to get in the car, etc) and for my rural-ish area i'm not too far off. The city is 30 minutes south and I'm a good 50% too low for that market.
Most photogs i know want to charge at least $75 and charge that for the PP work as well. IMO proof quality PP work is included in the hourly shoot fee. The final image editing depends...if you do very little and sell a $3 4x6 it's OK. Spend an hour on a 16x20 and you'll want more than what you've allowed for. The key to profit is to sell as few images (files) as possible, and then sell as many of that file as possible - so the PP work happens only one time.
What do you figure he'll spend on prints? How much profit is in there? If he gets a CD of files, will that be in addition to the prints, or instead of?
In other words, you expect to make $100 from the prints. If you make that or more, you don't really care about giving him the CD. So tell him the CD is $150, or free with a $150 print order. That encourages him to spend $150!
