I've been reading up on the Tokina 100mm f2.8 and the Tamron 90mm f2.8 for a friend...

It would seem that these two lenses are quite capable but I need a little hands on experience from anyone who may have either of these lenses.

As far as I understand the Tokina is slower at focusing than the Tamron and the Tamron is slightly sharper. However, the Tokina seems to be better built...

I've browsed some sample shots and both seem to be adequate lenses...

Swing me one way or the other!

Cheers in advance!

I know this doesn't help, but why not the Sigma 105mm? It's highly regarded....

Of these lenses, the Tamron seems to be the optical standout. I don't think the build is an issue.

The Tamron 90mm is built like a tank.

considering i've both dropped mine on the ground and drug it behind my car (in the bag), i'd have to agree with this...

lol thats how I found out. We were at a park. I had it sitting on the edge of a picnic table. When I stood up, The weight of the 3 people sitting on other side of the table caused the table to lift and my lens took a dive it hit the ground hard enough to bust the lens cover but no damage to the lens itself. not even a scratch.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

That is the lens that I am looking at, however probably won't be getting till this summer. I have never used one before but love taken Macro photos. I also heard they make a good portrait lens.

I have a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro and have been VERY happy with it. I've never seen (let alone used) the Tokina 100 f/2.8 though so I can't compare the two.

I second that, I have it and I love it.

One frustration you will have with the Tamron, Sigma or Tokina is that they all have funky (from a Nikon user's POV) filter sizes. Two highly rated macros to consider is the new Sigma 70mm & Sigma 150mm, both of which conform to normaly used Nikon filter sizes (62&72 resp).
