Given your definition then, obviously, there are trolls. Most at DPC define trolls as voters that purposefully give good images a 1 in order to lower that image's average score for some nefarious purpose. Statistics do not support the view.

The error of your thinking is you believe it impossible that a 'good' image can possibly deserve a 1 under any conditions. That would be untrue. Every voter has their own viewpoint and their own reasons for giving a low score even though you and I might disagree. They are fringe voters and entitled to their viewpoint as much as anyone else.

You make a good point, but after further review it has been noted before that trolls do in fact exist and are in a way a problem. Its been noted that unfortunately because they are a small group, are ugly, have been kicked out of their homelands, and can not get real jobs, the only computer's they can access are ones that are either thrown away or broken, therefore the images on the screen are usually in a 120x160 view in 2-bit color. Therefore all the pictures "DO" look extremely bad, so the votes ARE in fact based on what they are looking at. This doesn't even include the trolls that can't afford glasses or need contacts.

Wouldn''t it be interesting to have the number of 1''s or 2''s cast appear by the forum poster''s name and, by clicking the number, the photo titles appear. I'll admit to a few 1''s and 2''s myself.

I'm afraid all that would do is set a new low bar, maybe a 4. In time, everyone would complain that some "troll" is out there handing out 4s.

I've handed out 1s and 2s as well (moreso when I first joined than now). I mean, that's what the scale is for, in my opinion. As long as I am consistant, and don't cherry pick the images then it will all work out evenly.

Wow..really arent getting me...I said I KNOW they do not statistically affect the score. DO NOT..
I said they wreck the fun of watching scores come in and IN MY OPINION it is done to see the reaction in the corresponding forums.
When did I say any image is too good for a one?..Votes are opinions..but I would rather they be an opinion of the work then a game to seek reaction.

And for what is worth, I would never accuse you of thinking IN ERROR simply becuz we happily disagree. I may say you do not understand the point I am making, but you are welcome to disagree, thats what makes a spirited discussion fun!
Don't be a buzz kill, too !! :P

You mean me?? I have given ones, but they are as rare as tens from me...When I started here I voted low, now I start all images off at 5 and go up or down accordingly. It has to be wa-ay oof and other stuff as well as DNMC to get a one from me.

Wow. This thread has really veered off the original intention of the OP I think.

The concept behind the post was basically to ignore troll-like activity when talking about scores. We've all seen it at the beginning of voting for just about any challenge, where initial votes of 1,2,3 come in. With the low number of votes initially, those low scores are quite evident, then everyone gets up in arms about it in the scoring thread.

For those of you discussing what constitutes a troll vote or doesn't, isn't the point.

The OP was thinking (rather correctly IMO) that people giving low scores may get a kick out of seeing the reaction in the scoring threads. They made an impact.

Ignore the "trolls", don't talk about "trolls just came thru", etc... deny them the satisfaction of ticking people off and seeing the results.

That's my take on where this thread was headed. Could be wrong of course, and certainly wouldn't be the first (nor last) time. :D

Yes exactly...
And maybe a coincidence..but in the street photography thread no one talked about impact of early low votes of ones ( dont want to use the T word)
And for the first time in ages I, for one, did not get hit with the usual pattern of early low votes.

I'm just saying...
:)

I really don't think that a couple of 1's hurt your score much. I beleive the trolls are the ones that give out all the 4's. There are many people that have an average vote given of 4 or less. That means that ON THE AVERAGE, everyone gets a 4.

If you get twenty 4's, that will hurt you a lot more than two 1's.

I think they went the opposite. Everyone was claiming high scores early on....and then their scores dropped. I think the trolls tried a different ploy and went in and gave high scores only to return later to drop them to what they would have originally given them. Hence the dramatic drop on many of the entries.
