I will be traveling to key west soon. The problem is that the planes going directly into key west are super tiny. I refuse to put my camera equipment in the baggage are. My usual backpack for traveling is too large to fit under the single row of seats or the overhead of the tiniest planes. My question is, can i pack smaller backpacks and camera bags for carry on and then carry my camera with its largest lens around my neck? Will airports allow this?

I have done this before.. i took my laptop in a small bag with my lenses and had the camera around my neck it was allowed. I think it varies from airline to airline though.

You should be fine. Have a nice trip.

If you are in doubt you could always call them and ask.

I occasionally fly in to Nantucket on these small, 2-engine planes that you can't stand upright in, and they always let me carry my normal-size camera bag on board. Mine's a Lowepro AW4, if you need to check size.

Requirements have been known to vary between airlines and even between different airports. The best way to find out may be to call the airline branch at the airport you are traveling from and asking them.

I just have way too much stuff to carry these days. I can sweet talk my way on when there is a row of at least 2 seats next to each other. The bag will fit beneath the seats. Problem is, i will be on a plane that has only 1 seat per row on each side of the plane. Bag wont fit! :( I guess the other option is packing things that I dont mind going in baggage area in one bag and more delicate items in another bag. I will call the airline though. Thanks all.

After my last fiasco (international), I swear I am buying a carry on pelican before I step on another plane in case I need to "check" something. Domestic would be easier but those small planes will likely need most stuff checked.

You might be able to get away with 2 smaller bags instead of 1 big one.
