Same usages restrictions. Flash is lightweight and you
can use it almost anywhere. Strobe can be much heavier and need AC power connection and best used in a studio. As for the modifiers Leroy mentioned, read the Strobist site and it will tell you how to construct them for the flash units from materials that will cost you nothing. If you intend to mostly shoot studio shots strobes are probably the way to go.

I can't believe it, it's almost for free: $300 is a price for half that 600 flash here... wow

Not a bad kit... actually, I think angela_packard bought that kit not too long ago and is quite happy with it.

This is the kit that I use. I've added some umbrellas to the kit for portability (I hate transporting softboxes) and a nice big gold/white reflector and stand.. I'll likely add another head in the near future, but the kit serves me well.

it looks great, is it the same lighitng you used for your "she" photo? :) I think it's excellent. I've always wanted to get that soft golden look...but there must be much editing there, too, of course?

Actually "She" was shot with a camera mounted flash with the Lightsphere II (clouded). And yes, there was a LOT of editing :-) Much of it was Gaussian blur and curves.

:)!
I bought this kit today
I have been dancing the whole day today:) I am so happy, I have real lighting! I have an umbrella, a big silver umbrella! a have a soft box!! I have everything:) what a happy day.
and it works!!! I have tested:)

but
I can't set up a soft box, I didn't know it would be so hard, I just don't understand how to put together all the parts:)

and my camera triggers both monolights perfectly, I don't need any wires at all. the problem is I have to use my in-camera flash to trigger the monolights:( is there any way to cover the camera flash?

yoohoo!!! :)

oh, could you please tell me what a "modelling lamp" is? thank you!
***********************************************************************
no, nothing works with this silly camera. if I cover the in-camera flash it doesn't work at all! it doesn't take photos. if I don't there is too much light:(
could someone please please tell me if I can use the lighting I have with d200 without in-camera flash? there muct be some special function, syncronisering with the minolights, right? without using the camera flash? anyone please?

hey congrats on your new tools! now there's nobody goona stop ya! ;)
looking forward to get some lights, when i come home from iceland in summer...

sorry, can't help you with your latest questions, but on that noise problem of the d50: here in iceland over the wintertime i took like 90& or so of my photos in darkness, ALWAYS using the lowest iso (200), the d50 is (unfortunately) not a canon 5d, which makes noiseless fotos @iso1600 (everyone knows larus' nightshots ;D). what you can do is buying a remote control and just do long exposures for loger times than just the 30", that's how i did all my night shots with exposure times longer than 2 or 3 minutes. hope that helps ;)

don't curse at our holy d50, otherwise you'll go to hell and meet the REAL mephisto...;D

i think you should just get a cheep external flash unit or the flash remote to trigger your lights, that's not a big deal imo, otherwise use the wires...

;P
maybe not a big deal, I have to find it out. it's so irritating to have this fantastic lighting already at home, here, and not using it, ooo

I don't know if the D50 can do this, but if you could manually set the onboard flash to minimal power, you should have enough light to trigger the monolights, but the flash would be completely overpowered by them. So it would be as if the onboard flash didn't contribute any light to the resulting image.

yes, thank you, I have tried already, it is ok and I am almost sure I don't see any difference but still there is a bad feeling about it:(
and I havne noticed one thing: I can't make the shutter speed faster than 1/500 with the d50 flash, why is it like this?
03/05/2007 04:12:48 PM · #39
hmmm, I have just reilized I have got a "sync lead" with the lighting... do you think it will help? I don't see any hole in my camera though...:(

1/500 is the shortest sinc speed of the d50
but be proud of that, other dslr's only offer a minimum sinc time of 1/250 or even 1/180...think posotive, our d50 rocks!!! ;)

See the gadget I recommended to you at the beginning of the thread. That will do the trick. It has a sync port on it.
