First let me start by saying that I have a Canon PowerShot S2 IS.
I was out snowboarding on Friday and I had my camera with me. I was in Canada so as you would expect the weather was -10C not including the windchill factor. So it was basically -24C. I was taking pictures with my camera, but most of the time while snowboarding it was in my backpack. I did have a couple of falls where I landed on my butt, but none were nasty falls and none were on the bag.
I got ready to take photos with my camera one of the times and the wind gusts was bad and blue alot of snow in my face. The next time i took my camera out, the lens was stuck in the zoomed position. So when I try to cut my camera on you can here it trying to adjust the lens, but the lens isn't adjusting. So my camera gives me an error message (E18). I can still get into the view my photos mode, but I can't take any photos....
Someone please tell me what i did to my camera and how to fix it without getting a new camera (or taking it someplace that's going to cost me as much as getting a new camera)...

Check and see if Canon's factory warranty covers snowboarding wipeouts at -10c. Go ahead, I'll wait.
No, OK, take it back to place of purchase, feign confusion that your camera's not working and ask if they can help you. If they ask if you've had any accidents with it, mumble something about how it wasn't working when you got back from your snowboarding trip. If they ask about wipeouts, look embarrassed, kick the ground a few times, then fess up. They might still be willing to help you.
Also, just let it dry out thoroughly and see if it still works. Good luck! |

Well I had a Nikon CoolPix 8700 and tripped on a sticking up cobblestone and damaged it. Nikon service wanted a minimum of 300 bucks to fix it and they would go ahead and fix it without consent and if you didn't like the price AFTER they fixed it, and would not pay them ... they OWNED the camera.
Nikon service sucks HUGE!
Go ahead ... search out Nikon service policies on the web. I had no luck finding anyone to complain to about the local available service.

No help here for the camera problem, but as strangeghost seems to have noted in his reply, I believe wind chill only applies to people, and maybe animals. |

This page explains exactly the problems I'm having. I'll give these a try and see if it works.

This is the second time I've seen this in the last two days on the forum. I'm certainly not educated in physics but........
I drove about 50 miles with my ol '69 Camaro in heavy fog. It was about 36 degrees outside the car. I was doing 70 mph and in about 20 minutes a sheath of ice formed on the metal AM/FM radio antenna. It got quite thick. 1/4 inch. As I turned into my destination the antenna broke and fell off! I checked temp again and it was 36 degrees F.
As for the OP I'd go back to the store and tell them my camera doesn't work. I'd act stupid about any questions asked. (I'm very good at that.) If they decide to repair or replace it, you're in business.

Why? It wouldn't last any longer than anything else getting bumped around and wet. And yes I have a Nikon also.

The D200 would (watertight casing) ;).
Just joking, a camera is not made to deal with such punishment, but you also had a bit of bad luck, I friend of mind regularly has his camera with him when he is out skiing and it still works even though he has probably fallen with it more then once.

I snowboard with my K10D all the time. Ive fallen on it. It still works just fine. I do take care when riding with it not to drop any crazy cliffs, etc, but for the most part its pretty well padded in my backpack + lowepro case. Temperature doesn't seem to bother it, but I haven't been in anything less than -15 C with it.
My Powershot A75 took as much abuse as the rest of my body last season. It took the impact for alot of my epic bails, crashes, and wipeouts, and never skipped a beat. Its been rained on, dropped in a foot of powder snow, covered in mud, and landed on countless times and is still kickin today!
My S3 is a different story. My lens started jamming in the fall, probably due to dust from work this summer getting stuck in the lens somewhere. I definitely didn't treat that camera well at all, between dragging it through the BC wilderness and not worrying about it when snowboarding. I only use it now for its video capability - it still works fine, the lens is just finicky sometimes. It survived a 3 min long video of me ripping through the trees at Sun Peaks in -10 weather and high winds. It got a lot of snow on it with no additional problems there.
Moral of the story is, my camera gear goes through alot, because I go through alot and need to have a camera with me. The S3 is the only one to get angry at me, and thats not because of the cold.

Was that the local shop's policy/procedure, perhaps? I had no problem with Nikon USA service. Granted mine was under warranty, not sure about yours. I sent my camera in for a focus adjustment with the kit lens, and after calibrating it they offered to check it against all my other lenses as well, and they even paid to have my other lenses shipped to them (and of course they paid the return shipping on everything). It took longer than I wanted it to, but I have not qualms about Nikon's quality of service. |

the god damned E18 error strikes again!! I fricken hate that soooo bad. My Canon A80 did the same thing except it clicked and whirred and then lens would kind of scoot back and forth. I recently dropped my S2 IS (about 6 inches) and now then lens gets stuck occasionally on the way out or in, but it's only for a couple of seconds. From my experience, the E18 (on my A80) causes the camera no actually harm, but the lens only comes out when it wants to. Don't know how to help you...I just replaced my camera.

Okay I finally got home and took it apart a little and managed to fix the problem...well slightly. It still is kinda stuck but it goes in and out and still has most of the capabilities. It doesn't look pretty any more with all the scratches I put on it taking it apart.
It's pretty much good enough to use until i get a new camera within the next couple of months. Guess that is a shear sign that I needed an upgrade huh?? It's prolly going to get more abuse when I go snowboarding again tomorrow...but this time it'll be in New Jersey.
Thanks to everyone for your help....Guess now I should just get suggestions on a cheap upgrade...S3 or better though.

You wont find the S3 to be an upgrade. If youre going to spend 500 bucks anyway, get a dslr.

You will find New Jersey snowboarding is just as hard on cameras as Canada snowboarding is when you take a fall.

Unless he seriously crunched his camera when he fell, I doubt falling has anything to do with his camera problems. Unless... you do have a lowepro case for your camera, right?

I had it in a case..and the case was also in a small backpack. The lens still need assistance in retracting and coming out...so it's track..it could be a problem with the motor or something...I dunno much about camera hardware.
