Got this link on another forum and found it very interesting. It was a letter from Ann Monteith, a working wedding photographer and member of PPA, to a CBS new correspondent regarding what a wedding photographer charges, makes and can expect to work in hours for they money earned.

If you are, or have thought about, getting into wedding photography as a business give it a read. It was writting in November 2003.

Interesting letter. I've shot a few weddings and find it exhilirating, difficult, taxing, intense and wearing. The time and effort spent is incredible. It is not for wimps!

Very interesting. I am just trying to start making money with my photography, and am finding it overwhelming. I would love to see some numbers on photojournalism.

the pay is dirt, but if you work at it hard enough, you can make a few bucks. the main payoff is in getting exposure and name recognition. after a while, you start getting better assignments that pay more, as well as getting hired for event work that can pay really well. it's not easy, but it's a great place to start. i think that mastering the art of photojournalism can prepare you to make more/better money shooting weddings than just tagging along behind someone in the wedding business, simply because you'll develop a fresher eye for story-telling photography. the key to the pj stuff, though, is to take every assignment possible and treat each one like it was for sports illustrated or national geographic, even if it's just for a local weekly rag.

When I started to do some wedinggs for 900-1000 euros (more or less 1200 bucks) I was happy with the price.

After a few weddings like this I'm starting wondering if I'm not underpayed. All of the work behind the wedding day is so time consumming that you must account for every work. And dividing the money for all your work you feel your very cheap!
