Anybody else with a 10D notice that the colors seem a little dull? I've seen a lot of photos here with other canon cameras and I look back at the shots from my 10D and a lot of them dont have the pop that the newer cameras do.

Maybe it's just me...

They're always dull straight out of the camera...

do you shoot in raw?

No, probably not just you. The trend for the newer "prosumer" cams has been a more punchy, saturated look. The 10D behaves more like the pro cams, which by default have a less saturated, less contrasty output. You can easily replicate the look of the newer cams by increasing contrast and/or saturation in the camera settings, but beware... doing so will cause clipping to happen sooner, giving you more problems with saturated subjects and high-dynamic-range scenes.
The better alternative is to learn to apply post-process settings to get the final result you want.

I agree. Even if I were shooting JPEG, I'd want a less punchy image from the camera. It's more flexible in post process.

I shoot 99.99% raw and do post processing with CS2. In general, I have to do a lot of post processing work to get the colors to really stand out.

How does the 30D compare to the 10D in the color comparison category?

I don't know the 10D, but I bet it's just the same.

don't you love it? having total control. and with one click, it's ok. :)

The 30D shares the "Picture Styles" color control scheme with other newer Canon cams. The default color profile is quite saturated and contrasty. If you shoot RAW and process with ACR/CS2, however, Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) does not understand Picture Styles, and so you're in the same place as with the 10D. If you use the Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP)application to do the conversions, then you can apply any picture style you want. Interestingly, if you download the newest version of DPP, you can use that to apply Picture Styles to 10D RAW files.
Bottom line, it's almost always better to shoot in a more neutral style and bump contrast and/or saturation in conversion. Much more flexibility and much less risk of clipping channels. The one case where shooting JPEG in a more final-image-oriented mode is useful is when the images must be immediately transferred for display.

I have no problem getting great color from my 10D. I think, as others have suggested, that it's in what you do with the files on the PC that make the difference.

If you care to post your workflow, or, if you prefer, PM it to me, we can share notes.
