I've been experimenting with black and white and although it can work really well in some situations,do you think it works well with this picture?

Works for me. I prefer the B&W to the colour version.

I think you should try upping the contrast some more. You may need to dodge the pole to bring back some detail, but contrast is key in B&W. Neat shot too.

Thanks J I might give that a try!

I'd go b+w, but give it a slight 'S' curve on the curves and boost the brightness a little with the levels.

Cool shot.

Open in PS
Create new fill or adjustment layer (bottom right in layers palette)
Curves

(This curves gives a little boost in contrast)

To convert to b+w i would then
Create new fill or adjustment layer
Channel Mixer

(Just an example, play around with all the sliders until you like what you see, they don't have to equal 100%, if you like the combo but it's abit dark, or light you can compensate by sliding the constant up or down.

I definitely like this in b/w the best. Here is my edited version. I used The Gimp for this. First I adjusted the channels in Channels Mixer under the monochrome setting. Then I converted to grayscale, and intensified the whites with levels and adjusted the curves just a bit to make the dark tones richer.

I like BW photography more than colour, because it just shows the writing with light, without the noise of the colour (what I am talking about is that BW gives the chance to define lines and shapes and tonality only with light, while colour photography brings other parts to the appreciation of the image, which at some point will be overwhelming and distract from the pure appreciation of the form and shadows).

But, in this case, I think the colour photo is better, because it has only two major colours (white and blue) and a minor one (the reds of the pecker?). So, it's almost monochrome. I would go after a bit of saturation and bring up the reds and see how this work in colour. Definitely, this photo in colour is more lively to my eyes.

I agree with gjumi ... I like the color one better ...

Red peckers are good!

No seriously folks, I like the color version of this photo better ... I think it dies without the blue of the sky ...
