Ouch...I just got a thorn in my finger!

Would you be willing to shorten the length of your graphic signature line just a bit? I don't run my browser that wide and it causes me to have to scan left to right for the text in every thread you post to :)

Done.

so cedew... it seems like you feel that the unpaid membership does not offer any significant value. well, you still get more than what you pay for. there are two challenges a week that you can submit to, and there are numerous forums and discussions regarding many aspects of photography, art, and life (yes, some of the forums are members only, but most are open).

i am a libertarian and in favor of free-market economies. no paying member here did so against their will. value is relative... those who feel they get $25/year worth of value here tend to join and renew. others do not. perhaps a better set of questions to ask would be:
1- for the unpaid members, why do you like what you have access to enough to stay in the community, but not see the value in the paid membership? and, are you considering upgrading to the paying membership?
2- for the paying members in their first year of membership, have you found it to be a valuable investment and do you plan on renewing?
3- for the paying members who have already renewed at least once, please share what value you get out of this community

remember, there is also entertainment value of the community as a whole. if a movie is ~$9 and lasts 2 hours, maybe some people feel they get 6 hours of movie-level entertainment during the year. heck, i'd pay $9 just to browse through the portfolios of larus, librodo, sherpet , and sneezy and a few of the other veterans.

it's not just the cost of bandwidth and storage space, just as a book is not just the cost of paper and ink. keep in mind that a watch manufacturer's business analysis documents once showed they take $5 worth of steel and make it into $30,000 worth of watch springs. one last story before i sign out... a lady walks into a department store and wants a fancy ribbon for her hat. the man behind the counter ties an elaborate bow out of a beautiful shiny piece of ribbon, and says "that will be $50." the woman exclaims that $50 is a lot of money for a ribbon. the man unties the bow, hands the lady the ribbon, and says "madam, the ribbon is free."

Hang on...how does Cedew know what is available to members. He/She is only a registered member!!!

Granted some benefits are listed...but you don't see what forum threads are available until you are a full member.

Cedew.....have you been a member before?

Judi other then the Buy/Sell thread i um don't see much difference in the forums since i became a member. Maybe because whatever else is there didn't interest me but other then that i get my portfolio, mad more challenges, and a place to buy and sell thats what i saw and it was enough for me!

I have not been a member here, I figured I could participate at some level without paying. I cant even add a photo to my "portfolio" without paying. Under Challenges > Submit Photos > Free Study 2007-02, I cant submit anything without paying money. I think that sucks. On the plus side, I did get outside and enjoy the nice weather today. With a little trespassing, I was able to get right next to some massive wind turbines.

Congrats to those of you who didnt jump on the bashwagon. Even though some are sarcastic, the points are valid, as in replies from asimchoudri, beecee, and especially the funny one about how I shouldnt have paid for my camera...touche.

So just because you couldn't figure out that the "exclusive" challenges (or rather ONE of them - that is the point) is what you CAN enter, doesn't mean you should launch an attack on our beloved site as your very first post.

Had you asked that question in some civilized manner, and you would have had at least a dozen good answers and warm welcomes.

The fact remains that I cant post a photo without paying. Photobucket beats this place for that alone. You people have been members so long you havent noticed that you cant do crap without paying anymore. So this place is better because you can win a contest? So...what do you win...money? Gifts? What? After you win you just sit there satisfied with yourself? Neat. Save yourself twenty five bucks, post your photos on photobucket, and get real advice from fredmiranda.

You are comparing apples to oranges dude. Time to move on little man. Don't let the door hit you on the back of your thick head on your way out.

Poor cedew.... I am starting to feel very sorry for you, and I'm not being the least bit sarcastic here, I really mean it.

Somebody who is this fiercely angry and bitter at a newly found website (which has many happy members) must be at least a little bit like this in other places and the rest of his life, too.

Try to see the glass half FULL for a change, look for the positive sides and attempt to crack a smile or even a laugh - you'll feel so much better for it!

Actually you are wrong. I might have won a virtual ribbon every now and again...but the exposure has brought in many a clientelle. This site has quite a following and clients are more likely to check out worthy sites for photographers, rather than go to some pathetic site that doesn't attract quality. That in itself is worth much more than a piddly $25US.

Hmmm...maybe I have answered your question in a nutshell.

QUESTION - What does this site have to offer that others don't.

ANSWER - Quality!

Its funny, because you guys love this place so much, you actually think its better to pay than not to.

As far as equating a thread in the rant forum to someones personal life...well, I just hope you don't make your living as a psychologist.

You aren't understanding. Nobody here pays for the right to upload a pic in a portfolio. We can link our images from anywhere on the web. We pay for the ability to challenge ourselves against other quality photographers and increase our skills. Some silly forum critique at FredMiranda won't do that. You have to understand what you're dissing before the diss works.

I think for what this site does why shouldn't those who created it make a little cash?? I'm more than happy with what I get from this site.
