I found a good deal on a great lens through craigslist, but when I contacted the seller, he told me that the serial number has been scraped off, and he bought it at a police auction. Am I the only one that would be sketched out about buying a lens with no serial number, even if it was obtained legally?

If it is 100% legit, are there downsides to having a serial-less lens? Would I be able to send it to Pentax for service if I needed to? Does anyone have experience with stuff like this?

I need to figure this out quickly, as it really is a wonderful lens that I want in my kit very badly!

Never mind, I'm not going for it...

But, I suppose it is still a good question for future reference: is there any major downside to a lens with no serial number?

Sorry Andrew, missed this. Well, I would be tempted if the price is right. I guess if it was bought at a Police Auction there would a reciept as proof of purchase, thereby making it legit.

As for whether Pentax would repair it? I think they would if shown the reciept. What was the lens by the way?

Shame, maybe next time. Check out eBay. I have just got an M42 adapter and there are some great lenses in M42 mount if you don't mind complete manual.

I have an SMC-M 50 1.7, so I don't need another manual 50...
