I've never had a pet dog or cat, just fish in an aquarium.
Yes loss is loss, but I don't think you gave birth to that baby.
I can understand the emotions you are going through, especially since the accident involved you. It could have just as easily gotten run over by anyone else. Stay focused on real facts. Yours, and others' emotional wounds will eventually scar-over and heal a great deal.
As hard as it may seem this early, they are easier to replace then real live human people.
ADDED: I can see how animals can be like a family member.
They can never replace a human, they can't converse/think, or drive a car like one. I also do know some can mimic a few words, and sometimes are more compassionate and faithful, even more reliable, then some real people.

Amy, my deepest sympathies! I'm an animal lover myself and I had a cat that got caught in the fan belt of my parent's car many years ago. I know how hard it is to accept when they go, let alone through an accident like this. But, that's exactly what it is.....an accident. I'm sure that this little one lives on and is romping somewhere beautiful.
You know, there are people who don't take animals to the level that some of us do. And, they don't completely understand how a person could be so caught up in losing a precious little one like this. But, those who truly love animals, feel things much deeper. They are not animals, but rather FAMILY. That's how I think of all of my furbabies.
Take heart, Amy. I'm sure that this little one is just fine and there's likely another little one to come along in time who will need and want your love just as much. I know the hole that has been left behind. In time, you'll adjust and give your love to another deserving little one again.
