I just wanted to share this with other horse lovers. Our horses got out of the pastuer today due to a gate not being latched properly. One of them, my best buddy, found a roll of wire that was laying around and got it caught around his legs. He cut himself up so bad trying to get free that he had to be put down. The blood loss was so bad that the vet could not understand how he was able walk in on his own.

He was a good friend and I will miss him. He would follow me when it was time to feed and nudge me into the stall. When he was finished he would come lay his head over my shouulder so I would rub his chin. great animal and wonderful companion.

I'm really sad to hear about your loss. We've lost a few over the years and every time its tough. But there are those that are extra special ones that you really connect with and those ones you never really get over their loss.

Doc Reddert was with us for nearly 20 years and sired countless foals. He had such a great attitude and was highly intelligent. Unfortunately, like all of us, age set in and not in a kind way. His hips got bad and he could hardly walk. One day my brother made the offer to my parents to take him to the vet to put him down. My family normally has no problem putting down an animal that is suffering but Doc was a friend. (I myself had to shoot a cow that broke its hips trying to escape from a cougar). My brother loaded up Doc into the trailer. It was like he knew what was happening. He didn't balk and strangely he had no problem getting on.

My brother still gets teary eyed when he thinks about that day. As does my whole family.

That aside, Oreo was a beautiful horse and you can see from his eyes that he would be a great friend. A friend that will definitely missed.

My condolences to you James.

This is why I have come to enjoy this site. The support and friendship is remarkable. Thanks for the words of sympathy. He will be missed for a long time to come. I think the girls may be getting spoiled worse than they already are after this. Sometimes we forget how important things are until it is too late. Especially our animals. My dogs, cat and horses are more like family then pets. I got a slap and reminder of that today. I thought I felt bad enough when I had to take Sue (dog) to have ACL surgery a few weeks ago, but this one really bites hard. Thanks again "DPC Family"!

Just a few of my other babies.

James, I am so sorry to hear this. You have my sincere condolences on your loss - I truly understand that they're more than just "animals" as does everyone here who has furry best friends. Keep spoilin' your girls - they probably miss him, too.

James, I know how you are feeling. We had to put one of our mares down last week. It was tough on the whole family. Here is my son saying goodbye to his horse.

My heartfelt condolences,

My heartfelt condolences,

I feel for you and your family. My daughter lost her barrel horse 2 years ago to West Nile even after the shots that were supposed to prevent this. He got down in the stall and could not even stand. That was a gut wrenching feeling for us to have to put him down as well. Thanks for your kind words.

James I am so sorry for your loss, it is terrible when there is nothing you can do. I have only lost one and that due to EPM and he was just battling too much so we had him put to sleep but he was 25 years old.

I can't imagine how I would feel in your position. I so nearly lost my one stud colt two years ago but managed to heal him with patience and perseverence, the vet wanted to put him down, I wouldn't let him.

My animals are my children. Just remember the good times.

For all of you who have lost horses, I hope your memories help you through it.

I hope I'm not being insensitive, but could someone explain why it's necessary to put down a horse? I mean, is there something about the injuries or illness that you don't just let them die on their own schedule? I'm genuinely asking, not passing judgement; I know it must be a wrenching decision, so please help me understand the deciding factors.

Thanks.
