I'm thinking everyone wants to ask a totally random question from time to time. Here's a good place to put them. DPC is full of many genius minds, surely someone can answer any question given....

Here's my first one:
Will putting magnets on the side of my CPU hurt my computer?

Please say you didn't put magnets on the side of your CPU.

Magnets can erase your hard drive. Permanently.

ETA: Don't stick em on your monitor either. ;)

I wouldn't stick them on the monitor, but commercial magnets aren't powerful enough to erase your hard drive. They might cause some problems, but it's doubtful. But, better safe than sorry.

Here's my first one:
Would someone actually put magnets on the side of their CPU ?

Hard drives are shielded a fridge magnet has less magnetic energy then the magnetic field that your computer exposes to your hard drive on a daily basis.... ont he downside its a very concentrated area witht he magnet.

However a decent magnet say one that can disrupt the "beam directing" plates on a CRT's electron gun. SHould be enough to cause some serious memory loss.

OMG Brad lost his Pee er... P ! lol

Hard drives are magnetically shielded. You actually have to use a high-power neodymium or eletro-magnet to cause data damage. Unless you are placing magnets *on* your hard drive you're in no issue.

I'd definitely agree with "keep them away from the monitor", though. They won't really physically damage it, but they will mess with your colors pretty heavily.

Don't feel alone Richard. I didn't change my name either!

Actually, virtually any magnet can mess with your monitor. A significantly powerful magnet can displace the shadow mask permanently, but if you've ever had a small set of computer speakers next to your monitor you know that size doesn't matter in terms of image disruption.

I had my bladder removed. :P

When I originally joined, Brad wasn't available, and with this new username policy change, I was able to get it, as the brad that had it, had never done anything on site since 2003.

K - Another question:

Why don't houseplants die of old age? Seriously, I have one that I've had for over 20 years, it just keeps getting bigger (a pothos).
02/07/2007 11:27:46 PM · #22
It all depends on the type of plant and how long they live for...kinda like trees...or different species of animals.
