you know you don't have to point your browser here. If you don't think that this site is ran correctly why support it?

I'm not yelling, and don't want this to turn to a rant, but it's just a thought.

See... This is what I meant... You do not like my views so you want me to leave. This is exactly the "acting in a dictatorship manner"

Oh for gawdsake.... That's not what he said. He said, "If you don't like the way things are, why do you stay here?" It's not as if you don't have options, he is saying. That's a FAR cry from saying "I don't like your views, so get lost!"

R.

You have the same attitude only you are much older.

What the heck? It ain't MY attitude! I am just explaining HIS to you. And what does my age have to do with it anyway?

Nothing, I just thought you would be calmer and have better understanding for people and accept differences as a fact of life. That is all.
Have a good day. No offence is meant.

Let me try to express something to you: it is true I am "older" than most of the people on-site. It's also true I pretty much have a reputation for being level-headed and reasonable, I think. It is further true that it is simply in the spirit of being "fair" that I made that response to you at all, because it is YOU who was being neither reasonable nor fair in the way you characterized Joe's remark as representative of a "dictatorship" that wanted to banish all who don't think the way "they" do.

Let's be perfectly clear here: I haven't said a single word negative of your original idea in this thread. ALL I did was point out that you were misunderstanding or misrepresenting Joe's remarks. I most definitely did NOT endorse Joe's position, for the simple reason that I don't particularly agree with it. But I still defended it against your misreading of it.

wow, I think I have a talent today for starting drama in the forums. to think I stayed home from work today b/c of a migraine.

in my defence, I wasn't telling you to leave. I don't think you should, I think you have every right to be here. I was just asking, if you don't like how it's run then why do you support it.

I thought I made that clear by saying, I don't want this to turn into a rant, it's just a thought.

Bear_music: I think you're right....looking at your "correctly" edited photo Vs. the one that was submitted, there's a striking difference. And I'm of the opinion that the reflections being in the center of the face certainly gives the photo an "otherworldly" sort of look. Something I didn't catch initially, but in seeing them side-by-side, they have VERY different feels.

All from one little reflection :-) Kinda neat!! It's got me thinking about some different aspects of photography now, and how just subtle differences can really evoke quite different moods or feelings.

Come ON, people :-(

For what it's worth, I really prefer the original. Nice job on the retouching, though!

Yes, it IS amazing isn't it? The more I compare the two, the more I realize the original is far more effective. This brings up an interesting point: I can't tell you how often, in voting, my initial response has been "this would be so much better if *this flaw* were fixed!" And yet, many times when I go back and study the image more carefully, I'm no longer so sure of that, and often enough I completely reverse my thinking.

Why? Because our initial reactions are ALWAYS based on the way WE see things, and none of us can escape our reflexive preconceptions. But that doesn't make us right... Further study may help us enter the mind of the photographer, which is always a good thing. I try so hard to relate to images based on what the photographer was going after, rather than on what I wished s/he'd have done.

But at the same time, too often I see this rationale/approach used by photographers to "justify" or defend weak/ineffective work. So you have to be honest with yourself when you're making the image, really, if you want even a hope that the voters will see it your way...

have you ever thought about writing a book of essays on photography or just on seeing bear?

I think you have you should.

Anyway, re: the "misplaced catchlight", for what it's worth here's what the image looks like with the catchlight moved and the eye "repaired":

Does anyone have an opinion as to which version is "better"? I was one of the ones who caught the discrepancy and commented on it during voting, but this was nevertheless one of my highest scores given. At the time I thought the catchlight was an irksome flaw, now I'm not so sure. It does lend a certain otherworldly effect to the whole, perhaps :-)

Yours is better!

I didn't vote in this challenge but I did go in and add a comment on this photo after the results were posted where I felt the lightbox reflection on the inside of both eyes was distracting... course I didn't read the comments to find out that it was a copy.

But in the end the voters (except the originator of this thread) liked the photo and that is what counts ;-)

Bear, thanks for taking the time to help shed a little light.
As I wrote in the post challenge comment, the image was left 'wrong' on purpose. I tried a number of variations and in the end the entered image had a more comfortable feel for me. The editing here had nothing to do with reality and wasn't meant to... rather it was an effort to use the editing rules to my liking and create something that was visually pleasing albeit in an unusual way. It's well known that if done reasonably well, symetry has a very nice asthetic effect.
TIhadi has a valid point and proved how wise he is by catching on to my seemingly flawless ruse. I honestly didn't think the combined wisdom here at DPC was such that anyone would catch on. And for trying to fool everyone, I'm sorry. I'll be in touch with SC shortly in hopes that they will agree to amend the title to something like...

'Girl's Eye Mirrored With Catchlites All Wrong And Shadows That Don't Make Sense So Don't Vote For This Because It Really Sucks And Contravenes The Laws Of Physics'.

So much for trying to pull a fast one. TIhadi you have my respect... can't pull the wool over your eyes... :)

I'd been ignoring this thread on my front page for a while now, but I finally had to see what it was because it kept popping up.

This is the most nonsensical circular argument thread that I've ever seen.

I declare the "dictatorship" comments to be prima facia violation of Godwin's Law. This thread is over.

It seems everyone on this thread is acting in a dictatorship manner because we don't agree with the starter of this post. Please straighten up everyone and conform to our new leader's views.

I never noticed that the image in question was a mirror reflection, I just assumed the light source was close and centered between the subject's eyes. No physics violations perceived or intended, your mileage may vary!

ps: I am older than Robt. but younger than Graphic_Funk, and yes, occasionally flatulent!

You proved to be as good of a soul as you are a photographer, and you have my respect too.
If the SC agrees to change the title I want my (1) vote traded into an (8).
How does "An eye for an eye" sound?
Have a great day and thanks.

Please do not needlessly read between the lines and make it sound that I have said more than I have written or meant.
Thank you.

I love Wikipedia :)

TROLL
"Experienced participants in online forums know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore him or her, because responding encourages a true troll to continue disruptive posts ΓΆ€” hence the often-seen warning "Please do not feed the troll", for which PDNFTT is a common initialism.

The word troll is often and easily misused as ad hominem attack against someone whose viewpoints and input cannot othewise be silenced. Its successful use and misuse reveals much about how starkly different the world of technicians is compared to normal social and political discourse."
