Despite it being ABSOLUTELY FREEZING here in New York, I finally managed to persuade my friend to pose for me today as I try to learn portrait photography.

As this is my first time really trying to take these types photos, I'd really like to ask for your feedback. Please don't kill me on technique - I know I have a long way to go, but some comments around what is good (if there is anything) and what could be improved...and how...I would appreciate it tremendously.

First Portrait Session

Have a good weekend.

Hey Sam... I must say you did a remarkable job here. The posing is excellent and you have captured her personality perfectly. Your technique is excellent in my opinion, using the light completely to your advantage. The only minor thing I might mention, and this is only a personal thing, I might think about a little fine detail work. For example, the lighting although very good brings out a few blemishes in just a few of the shots. It's no big deal but may be something to address. But again that's just me. GREAT WORK!

You mean skin blemishes? I guess I should 'heal' these out. Or do you mean other blemishes?

Yes skin blemishes. Very minor but enough to notice. Everyone has them and for me it's a simple enough task to make it worthwile... :)

I like the images a lot... but don't care for the long load times to display the images or the irritating bar that keeps dropping down covering the top portion of the image. I'm on Firefox and haven't tried IE to see if it's any different. I'm also on cable and most images which are much bigger than yours "pop" onto my screen, so it just seems like yours are coming off awfully slow for how big they are.

Nice job. I second Rudy's comments about the nice posing and good choice of light conditions. As you do portrait sessions more, they will get easier and you and your model will both be more comfortable. That will show in your images as well.

I would also agree that the poses are very good. nothing to really critique on the photos they look great. The website was kinda a pain for me in firefox though.

Nice warm lighting for your very cold day! I like 1964 the best, but they are all very nice. How did your friend like them?

I've changed the show so that bar doesn't appear any more - sorry. Don't know why images load so slowly for you - they are all 120kb or less. My friend hasn't even seen them yet; she's out partying while I'm at home!

Looks like you got some great images there. Using firefox 2.0 here and everything loaded great here.

Maybe it was the bar. The images loaded much faster for me this time. And it's not a cache issue, last time I went back and forth many times over each image and it was slow every time. Now it is fast every time.

#10 is my overall favorite. But I do like what you've done. I think putting all or some of them together into some kind of collage would be perfect as they seem to show the many sides/expressions that she has.
