Hey guys. I'm thinking of starting an online photography course (mostly for the business info because I've never been much of a business person) and after all of my research, I think this one: School of Photography - Freelance Photography Course is the one for me. It covers a TON of information for just $135.00, and of course you work at your own pace.
Anyone else interested in giving it a go? We could use this as our motivational / homework / support group thread.
The site's main page is: School of Photography

Cindi, I'd be very interested in doing it (looks quite reasonably priced), my only concern is I don't think I really have the time right now. (I'm in the middle of relocating back to Europe....)
However, if you do decide to do it, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the quality of the course. I have looked at the site before with a view to doing one of the classes.(I think they are located in Ireland).

yea, it looks interesting but I think I'd need a little more convincing. How did you conclude that's the best one?
I also noticed they are in Ireland. I'm wondering if the courses on business will directly apply to the way things work over here. |

I didn't necessarily conclude that its the best photography course online, just that it looks like the right one for me. Some reasons - affordable pricing, live tutor support, forums for peer support, broad course ciriculum and an established track record. I spent some time reading the forums where students discuss the courses they're taking and show their work and was reasonably impressed with the level of discussion and quality of images.
As far as being applicable over here, I'll just say that my mentor is British and he never taught me anything that didn't apply just as well in the states.

I'm all logged in and looking over the first lessons. I will say that they are short, but the wording is very precise and accurate. When your as A.D.D. as I am, short-to-the-point lessons are just right.
The first Project is an "assignment". You choose from a list which type of assignment you will shoot, then send in 5 images from that assignment.

I've been looking for a good course recently. I just had a look at the one you posted a link for and it seems very rreasonable, but arent they trying to cover too much? I mean lesson 3 photojournalism, lesson 4 sports photography, these are courses (and potentially long ones) in their own right arent they?
I did a street photography course with betterphotoand it was about three times more expensive but I learnt a load. |

HMMMMMMM......
ouch.
Cindi, your photographic skills are amazing to say the least. To hone those skills I can see.
My time is limited, so this may be a good answer for me to hone my skills.
I also have had some ideas that I want to explore.
I may join with you, if you don't mind.
Need a day to let it sink in, and talk to my boss (wife).
I will let ya' know.

Its definitely NOT a college course (hence the lower price). Its more like a detailed seminar, something you would pay to attend over a weekdend or a week, with the added bonus of live people (the forum or your assigned tutor) to discuss your homework with. Some will not find value in such an overview (especially if they have done a LOT of research themselves). For those who feel their work is professional quality (or will be) and wonder which direction to turn next - its a good course.
*(in my neanderthal opinion)

Hi Cindi,
As a working freelancer(part time) I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the project. I'm always looking for something to give me an edge or make me better(need lots of that). I looked it over and it seems reasonably priced I just wonder about the content that it might include and the fact that it isnt based in the US, how well the copyright and business aspect relates to the US. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hey Matt. Everything I've read so far has the Euro and US explanations - including how to charge for expenses (mileage in kilometers and in miles), etc. They seem to be well aware that a large % of their students will be US-based.
Of this course, Module 2 is the one that really interests me. I'm a bit tired of working with stock agencies (hate the waiting) and ready to find some exclusive clients --- I'm hoping that module will give me some direction in finding the type of commercial clients I need to fill in around my portrait work.
I'll keep you guys updated as I work through the course. I REALLY wish I could just copy/paste some sections here becuse there is some great advice so far, but I wouldn't dare risk that copyright infringement. I'll send a snippet if someone is interested, but that's all I dare.

Well I really want to hone my skills and also learn how to promote it. Not much for the stock part but I will do it.
Strange thing about you recommending stuff with me Cindi.
You recommended the Alien Bees. I bought them for $723.00, next day a check from the government for $550.
You recommend this school which cost $135. We get a check today from the mortgage company. Seems we overpaid our escrow by $134.77.
Thanks for the pm. I am still debating.

Its simple. Once you register you are given a password and ID# which allows you onto the course site, but will only allow you to view the course you registered for. All of the reading material is online and you read through at your leisure. When you hit a project, you take whatever time you wish to do the project, then email it to your assigned mentor for feedback. There is no real "homework" except for the projects, but you are advised (in your welcoming email) to practice each of the lessons as you go along. I would love to see more in-depth content - but again, this isn't a college course, more like a seminar.
