Stores it on the clipboard. Just open Photoshop (etc.), create a new file and paste.

I don't! I hardly ever use the icons, I just download stuff directly to my desktop so I can easily find them. Manic is always on my case about that.

To elaborate: the Windows OS uses something called a "clipboard" to store copied data and make it available for pasting into applications. Every time you use the "copy" command, you replace what is currently on the clipboard with the new data you have just copied.

"prn scrn" (or "print screen", whatever your keyboard calls it) is the third key from the right on the upper right corner of your keyboard. It is essentially a "copy" command that copies all that is visible on your screen to the clipboard so you can paste it in other applications. If your screen has more than one window open, you can use the "alt" key with "prn scrn" to copy only whichever window is currently the active window: this is how folks capture shots of Photoshop dialogue boxes for tutorials.

In any case, once you have copied the screen you can paste it into any application that accepts .bmp files and then resize it or mess with it any other way you would with any image, basically, then save it as a file and put it in your workshop and make thumbs of it and so forth and so on.

I know there are utilities that allow you to save whatever you have copied into a clipboard file folder and then later open those again into the clipboard (useful for things you may want to paste repeatedly over an extended period of time) but it's been a long time since I used one.

If you look close at mine, on the left near the bottom is a folder called "misc links", and that's where I drag all those loose icons/links to periodically, whenever things get too crowded. In my case it's not so much stuff I have downloaded as it is links I have dragged off the browser's address bar onto the desktop, which for some reason I prefer to do instead of making bookmarks, I think because most of them I end up never going back to after one return trip, and bookmarks are harder to clean house on than links...

I like a very tidy desktop -- but notice the background. Yes, DPC has taken over my computer again! lol
