Well I got the lens just in time for my daughter's school play. Shots came out very well "technically". Lens worked great. Easy to use and seems to have done well for a first use!

Used PS for levels and did remove some noise from "darker areas". However, even with iso at 640 lens seemed to pull enough light to eliminate the noise.

Edit: These are at full 200mm.

These look great!
You are quite brave with the high ISO, but it looks good. BTW, I have been looking at that lens for a long time. I would probably have bought it already if the 70-200VR was not there - now I'm not sure which one to get!

I had the 18-200 VR. The VR didn't help much in "everyday" use IMO. With that said, if I would have had a VR 70-200 with me tonight, I surly would have been able to use a lower ISO....however, I would have had to use the VR to compensate for the slower shutter speed I would have been forced to use. The slower shutter speed would likely have "motion blurred" moving "actors" even if I did not want the "motion"...does that make sense?

In my opinion, at least on these two shots...I saved $1000 by NOT getting the VR and using Neat Image to remove a little noise !

With all of that said: If I could afford the 70-200mm VR.... I'd get it !

I am going to be shooting low-light serious work soon and am presently testing ISO levels, but I need to get the ISO inherent feel for the D200...

I used the 70-200 VR to get this shot, that you so kindly say such nice things about...

I use my 17-55mm 2.8 more, but the 70-200VR is the real beaut in the bag. The 17-55 is just my workhorse.

There's my fav ! I was so impressed with the shot...I forgot that you shot it with the VR !

I'd say if your subjects are going to be "still" while you use slow shutter speeds with VR then you are making the right choice. In my experience with the 18-200 vr, it seemed that just when I needed the slow shutter and VR...my subject were moving all over the place creating all kinds of problems with motion blur!
