My photo for Fill the Frame II..

I would like some pointers on processing skin, because I know that was one of the biggest issues in this pic. Also any other critiques are welcome.

Things I now know that could have been corrected/edited:
-circle cropping around shoulders
-brightness around face (just now taught myself how to do that)
-Pic was a tad oof
-and of course the overly dramatic DNMC lol

Anyways, any help very appreciated!

Well I am not an expert, but, since you are not getting an answer, I thought I would give it a try.

Neat Image cranked almost wide open ...
PS Filter/Noise/Despeckle
Crop
Spot sharpen eyes, eybrows and lips softly at 20% just to make them pop a bit.
Resize to 640 X
NO USM!

What do you think? ... Do you like?

Edited to say ... Don't forget I was only working with a low res master.

Skin doesn't look too bad to me. What imperfections there are could easily be covered with makeup if it bothered you. Personally I find the biggest issue with the photo to be the focus.

One quick thing you can do is:
1-Duplicate layer
2-Apply a large amount of gaussian blur to the duplicate layer (5 or more)
3-Back off the opacity of the gaussian layer downward to give the image a soft, smoother look.
4-Add a layer mask and brush with a low opacity feathered brush to remove all the blur around the eyes, mouth and any other areas that you want absolutely sharp.

There is a bit of an artform to that, but play around and you will catch on fast.

You can also create a "clone/blur" layer to smooth things out as well to make "hand" adjustments to specific areas. That can be combined with the gaussian technique to.

To my eye this version takes on a plastic "NeatImaged" look and is oversmoothed. However, NeatImage can be used to good effect.

If you duplicated the layer and applied NeatImage to the duplicated layer instead you have a lot more adjustment options. Then you could still back off on the layer opacity of the NI layer for fine tuning on the face. Then add a layer mask to that and mask off NI effects everywhere else except where you want it. It leaves a more natural look and you avoid NeatImage's artifacting on the edges of smoothed area.

This would be another way to achieve your goal.

Ok this might be a stupid question, but is Neat Image only in the CS2 products or should I have it in PS7? I havent noticed it so that is why I ask.

Thanks for all the tips. I have been practicing with the G-blur technique. I was wondering however, since I wouldnt want the eyes to be blurry, would I just use the lasso tool to do seperate pieces and the blend them together in the places that need it? (if that makes sense)

Neat Image is a combination stand/alone and Photoshop plugin tool that you can download the trial of for free to try out. Just search for it on the web.

I just used the sharpen tool and chose a soft brush just larger than the iris and set it to 20% and enlarged the image on my desktop to see well what I was doing and carefully and slowly and selectively sharpenend around the eyeball and eyebrows and lips and if you go too far just step back a step or three. I did not bother with any lasso or other selection or masking tools ...

P.S. I use Photoshop 7.0 ME

P.P.S. I was just demonstrating the extreme use of Neat Image and what you can expect if you do that. I would use an original ... not a 640 pixel image to start with and not set it SO high so as to make her complection totally and unbelievably flawless.

P.P.P.S. //www.neatimage.com/download.html for the trial download.

Greetmir beat me to the punch. You can also use the history brush tool after using the blur. Here is a link to neat image
