The self-portrait challenge reminds me that there are quite a few kids contributing photos to this site. I think it's great that they're starting young, but I think I will be a little more careful in my comments and voting. Some of those "really bad pics" might be a 7-10 year olds best shot. Please let's try to be kind and helpful in our comments. Maybe, "This sucks" you can blow off, but to a kid that would be devastating.

Hey I wonder if it would be possible to have a kid division here at DPC. Like say 13 and under, objectionable photos and it would be kids competing against kids. Would something like that be hard to do?

Well, my philosophy is that the sooner they learn of the real world, the better :)

The "real world" is more than just getting cut down and ripped apart all the time, and we certainly don't have to deliberately expose our kids to that sort of bitterness.

16 or whatever age people want. I'm sure there are a lot of DPCers that have kids that would love to join. Maybe they can vote on their own shots, but a panel of parents could give useful critiques, like the CC but for kids. I volunteer to do anything to make this work!

I think too we either need to remember that there are kids competing or we need to have a under 16 or even 17 and under challenge going for them, and as for the consent forms I am still waiting to get one for Kris!!!! I requested one but I seem to have been forgotten.
I have to agree though about our comments, I received a comment on the portrait challenge that had it been given to a child I would have freaked out over the comment. But being given to me I sat here and laughed yep I sold my soul to the devil aright and he promised me a DPC ribbon....he lied!!!! |

I have my twins (10 years old) in here and they have learned more in 8 weeks than I have been able to give them in years. Before they were accepted I have to sign a paper saying that I take full responsibility for their acting and submitting to this site. But I think that this also means that I shall help them and guide them in their daily work here. I think they shall manage their own shooting and that we afterwards can look at and discuss received comments and results. To go through their comments and help them understand it all is VERY important.
It´s important for parents to remember that their kids behavior on this site is their responsibility.

You get the excellent Dad of the day award today. Seriously though. Your post made me smile. It's nice to see people still being responsible for their kids. It happens SO often that parents just don't care. I'm with you on this one. :) |

Ouch! I think the only thing they'll learn is that there are A**holes who can't leave constructive criticism. And than they won't leave constructive criticism. I think a kids DPChallenge is a neat idea kind of like the Nicklelodeon for digital photography. |

lets not forget that if we start choosing which pictures to see during voting this could lead to false voting patterns.
Whats the point of a random order of pictures if some of you are going to completely skip some of the pics.

I already skip the ones I feel I'd rather not see. I don't argue that the person shouldn't post them, he certainly has that right. I also have the right not to vote on them. |
