Ok. I've had both now. Cable beats DSL hands down. Not only in speed but reliability. I switched to DSL back in July and had nothing but connection problems with it from day one. I should've known that anything coming thru a phone line would be junk but I had to give it a try. Now I'm back on with cable and I love it. It's fast and reliable.

Your lucky. Where I am we don't have that option...only ADSL...crappy phone line. Last night I had to rebuild a website for someone...and uploading it was a joke. I only have 256kbps upload (soon to be a whopping 356kbps upload - don't laugh...it is crap) and I was getting upload speeds of...a huge.... 0.06kbps.
I am serious. It estimated 5 hours for a 12 mb file to upload.
Now where is the technology...oh that's right...we have it...but Australia will only release it one bit at a time. Give me a break. |

The connection I opted for today is 5 Mbps. It was on special for $9.95/month for 12 months. They offer a connection at 10Mbps. I was afraid to ask how much that service was.

A few years back, the phone company started offering DSL. I tried to order it immediately, but "not available in your area" - months go by and I get a flyer "Now Available!" Call them up, schedule installation, they come out and inform me I am like 100' shy of the max distance froma substation. Meanwhile AT&T was the cable company had nothing going on. Then Comcast buys AT&T and suddenly cable internet was available to ME!! My brother (lives in the Bay Area) had DSL for a long time and I was impressed with the speed whenever I was visiting - compared to my network sharing a 56k modem that never connected at more than 33k on dial up. After the cable was installed, I ran a speed test on some website and it was SMOKIN! Like several times faster than DSL. I was happy and called my brother and had him run the speed test and then said "huh, mine says..." :D
But I will say that when the internet connection goes down occasionally, I seriously reflect on my utter dependency in fear and wonder. ...then next thing you know it's back up! :D |

Cable, undoubtedly. To get the same speeds on DSL as cable you need to spend astronomical amounts.
My download is 8Mb sustained with up to 16Mb burst. (That's megabit. So, 800kb average, with up to 1.5 megabytes per second for short intervals.)
Upload's only 768Kb (76 kilobytes), but most people don't do much uploading. I host my websites from my cable as well as doing a lot of torrent downloading and uploading with no issues at all. |

In about 3 weeks my service is changed over to 1.5mbps(up to 8mbps)/356kbps. For $89-95pm. And that is cheap out here. |

I had DSL for many many years with Earthlink - I moved home at the beginning of the year and tried to get Earthlink to install DSL service which they said they did - I could not get it to work for toffee - After the usual 3 million hours on the phone I finally got someone to answer - They blamed it on my modem which had never had a problem and knew it was not related but they insisted before they could come out they would send me another one - Which they tried to charge me for!!!!!! I told them I would pay if it made the service worked but not until that happened - This is now week 2 by the way and i am waiting for the modem (In the mean time I keep having to take a trip to Starbucks to send my pictures through to my orders) Modem arrives and of course makes no difference what so ever. They then estimated another 1-2 weeks before someone could come out and check the lines etc. In the mean time i was having my TV cable guy in to hook us up for TV. I just happened to ask if it was available in my area which he replied yes - Went to the van got a modem that works with cable and had me on the net in less than 10 minutes! It was the first time i enjoyed waiting in line on the phone to Earthlink to cancel my order! Beats DSL by a mile - The amount of times my DSL used to drop - So far fingers crossed no drops yet - Also upgraded to the superfast Roadrunner and it's fab! Phew, sorry for the rant but i needed that off my chest....See ya Earth..stink!

I remember not too many years ago when cable internet in the US cost that much to have. | Yep, I paid something like $120/month for ISDN, which was a freakin nightmare and never worked. I mean NEVER. I ditched it after a month. |

I'm on cable now but when I was on DSL I got great service. Although at the time I lived real close to my provider's central office which always helps to produce a strong signal.
