i wanna get a friend of mine one of either as a present..
which one should i get him.. he's an ammature...
whats the difference really between them ?

The main difference is that the 580 can be used as a master in a multi-flash setup whereas the 430 can only operate as a slave in a multi-flash setup.

If it is a speedlite give him a 580ex. Has more options is more powerful, it can be a master and a slave. It costs a little bit more, but if you can afford it its the way to go.

A 430ex you can not use as a master, just a slave. So if you get him the 430ex later he can get the 580ex if he feels the need for a master flash and his skills have developed.

As an amature I'm sure they would be very happy with either one. I've used both. For all uses I've had, the 430 does the job fine.

Personally I don't think the slave master is a big deal because when I'm using a multi light set up I don't need my external flash to be a master. I'm sure others will disagree though.

Do get the plastic dome diffuser for either though! A must have.

I agree, the 430 is fine. The slave/master issue is largely irrelevant unless you have more than one flash, in which case you could easily get the 580 as the second one ;)
