there's a lot of talk on different forums, but not a lot of shots coming through yet.

i did find this: //www.flickr.com/photos/wingmanzero/sets/72157594297617283/

a flickr user with a bunch of images ... it's a start!

i'm definitely interested in this lens. it'd make the perfect wide/fisheye.

Okay, I want both of these!!!

- Tokina 10-17 3.5-4.5 DX fisheye zoom
- Tokina 16-50 2.8 DX

I've been wanting a Fisheye for some time. I have the Tokina 12-24mm. But Fisheye allows for some extra fun.

The 16-50 2.8 DX is not as wide as my 12-24mm but man. With 2.8 this might be my new up close bag gig shot lens. I often have found myself wanting something that could cover both the range of my 12-24mm Tokina (the first is f/4 and very wide) and 28-70mm Tamron (sometimes often is just not wide enough for me to capture the whole shot). I found myself switching lenses several times in a gig.

16-50mm @ f/2.8 sounds perfect. Tamron apparently is also coming out with a 17-50mm f/2.8 lens for under $500 supposedly.

As for build quality, all I know is my Tokina 12-24mm is probably the best built lens I have used after my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS

I have it. Haven't had much of a chance to use it. Thoughts so far:

gotta really watch the light - CA is pretty bad if you don't
gotta really watch the view finder - 30D only shows about 90% - watch those sleeves and feet.
soft compared to L lenses, duh. better than the 75-300 USM II I have. Center sharpness can be pretty good, just watch low shutter speeds. duh.
17mm doesn't show much fisheye effect
10mm does.
amount of fisheye dependent on distance of subject from lens.
color/contrast depends on lighting. Raking light seems to be more brutal than any other kind.

A few snaps straight out of camera - NO POST PROCESSING except resize:
100% crop
compare:

Hope this helps. Its really too cold to go out and shoot right now which is why I don't have more.

Thanks Dahkota.

Hey the Saj. That 16-50 sure does sound good and I've been waiting for it myself. Sadly, I've been waiting since February LAST YEAR!

It was supposed to come out last may, then last june, then the end of june, then july, then..... Fortunately, my cash situation has been VERY tight and uncertain, so it's sorta OK...

Tamron came out with their 17-50 f/2.8 some time ago. It's been available for some time, even here where lenses are usually available a month after anywhere else... Must be the shipping time it takes to go from Japan to Taiwan as opposed to Japan to USA... (?)

Photozone.de has a review of the 17-50 f/2.8 and has had for some months.

Tamron is often not quite as sharp as Tokina, but Tokina usually has more CA. Tamron is still usually VERY sharp. Of course, this is all hearsay...

I'm getting VERY close to picking up the Tamron after all this waiting though.

thanks dahkota, those are some nice images.

this will probably be my first non-nikon lens!! :)

it's a very, very tempting purchase, especially considering the quality and the price.

i wanted the nikon 10.5mm fisheye, but i'm not keen to drop $800+ for a lens with such limited use.

the tonkina would give the same fisheye performance, as well as giving me ultra wide angle shots too.

perfect combination!!
